One good thing you can do as a boost
to your section is to huve a community
exhibit at the Walker County Fair in
October.
War, politics and strikes have been
sensations so long we are kinder getting
used to them and we cau read about
them now without alarm.
In the breathing spell we now have un
til November, let us get busy in our com
munities am! see how many good things
can be done to make that, community a
better one.
»
The debating society at Villanow is a
worthy movement and the interest taken
in it is wonderful. Somebody is doing a
little clear and constructive thinking for
the upbuilding of that community.
The greatest opportunity any man ever
has offered him comes to him in his own
neighborhood. The kind of a man you
are in your community determines your
conduct in the affairs of state and nation.
Elections may coine and politics may
go, but agricultural appropriations go on
forever. The available fund for agricul
tural purposes now reaches $30,128(852.
Uncle Sam is a farmer as well as a fighter
That School Improvement League at
Chickamauga is doing some fine things for
the school and town. It is being felt all
over the county, and this is true because
somebody there is interested enough in
the proposition to make some real sacri
fices, and the** real sacrifices have uni
fied those people for a high grade school.
MORE PROSPERITY FOR WALKER
Work on the Dick’s (.'reek road has been
completed and the road leading on by
'Trans and to (let Up has been opened and
put in good shape. The gang worked to
one mile of the Chattooga county line.
When the Broomtown road was finished
it was thought that no people could ap
preciate the good road down that beau
tiful and fertile valley more than the res
identers living along it. And this is true.
Hut from the people living on the Dick’s
Creek road conn* the same appreciation.
Chattooga county commissioners are
talking of connecting with the Walker
line byway of Suhligna and (lore. If this
is done and it will be done sometime in
the near future, it will mean that cotton
and other oroducts going to Rome and
Dalton will be marketed in Walker. This
means more money in circulation in our
county, which means better times and
more prosperity for us all.
We do not realize the value good roads
will mean to us in our development even
vet and we are anxious to see a twelve
month's road leading into every section of
the county, and a twelve month’s read
made of eve**v road in the county.
SCHOOL TIME IN WALKER
School hells all over the county are
ringing these mornings calling the young
folks of our county to the school room
No better call comes to Walker county
than the call of the school bell. It means
a chance is being given the young minds
to develop into the full stature of real
jhien. It means a safe guard against an
ignorant future. It means strength and
poise ainid»t a world of strife and eonfu
aion.
If then* uas ever a time when people
needed to a* capable of thinking that
time ia now, and in America. The boy
who is deprived of a chance to get his
mind trained into the habit of clear and
logical thinking is being deprived of bis
right*, and with the schools dotting Walk
or county bill* and vales, every citizen
should see to it that his children are be
ing given this chance.
The school spirit in the county is grow
ing, Ipr rojtorts come from the various
teachers that more children of school age
are attending school this year than any in
onr history.
Leaders in progressive thought in
every community should keep thinking
about better schools, better school facili
tics, better trained teachers, etc., until it
should not be a distant date when every
school in file county is doing its full share
by the students in training them for
higher education and life.
Strike hard for that school in your
community. Co-operate with the school
forces, boost it, plan for it and make it
one of the institutions you delight to talk
about when people visit your community.
Your permanent value to your community
is largely measured by the interest you
take in your school, and by the sacrifice
you make for it in its efforts to give back
to you the legacy of a trained youth.
All together for Walker’s greatest year
in education
DIXIE HIGHWAY CLUBS
A movement has been started in Geor
gia, which will sooner or later be put in
operation along the entire route, to or
ganize Dixie Highway clubs, for the pur
pose of advancing the agricultural inter
est all along the great thoroughfare, and
to make the highway one of beauty and
attractiveness to tourists. The idea is n
good one and one that will advertise the
South particularly and cause eastern and
northern capitalist to look over our farms
and invest here.
Washington county has promoted the
idea and it is the purpose of that county
to cultivate thp two acre frontage on both
sides of the Dixie Highway, and thus ex
hibit by a series of farming plats, the n
gricultural possibilities of Georgia.
Clubs similar to the corn clubs will be
formed, and scientific and intensive farm
ing will be the program.
No county in the state appreciates the
Dixie Highway more than Walker county,
and this plan should be put info operation
here and let. the, tourists see what fine crops
Walker soil produces and what a fine
place Walker is to invest in It will pay
and will advertise our county in manv
helpful ways
Let some ambitious young farmer, who
lives on the Dixie Highway, start, the
club work in his community to make tlu*
Dixie Highway through Walker the most
attractive of any in the entire chain of
counties. This is one way to get the
travel through Walker and a very effec
tive one.
Begin talking it among your friends
today and sUtrl a club at once.
MORE SERIOUS STILL
The paper situation does not clear up
as the tall months come on, but rather
the scarcity grows more and more ser
ious. The scarcity is not only felt in tin*
United States hut it is a world-wide short
age. The Manufacturer's Record of re
cent date had the following editorial on
the critical paper sitrntion:
“The scarcity of paper, which is so
seriously affecting the newspapers of the
l nited States, is not confined to this coun
try. nor even to Europe. Reports to the
1 nited Stales Government show that
there is a very serious scarcity in Brazil,
and there are signs there that a paper
crisis is approaching. It is suggested in
that country that the newspapers should
print smaller editions in order to econo
mize on paper. Reports from Spain indi
cate that the manufacturers of paper
,*uive advised tin* Government that, in
view of the short supply of paper, they
are willing to discontinue the export
trade, and have asked that the Govern
ment fix a price on paper. A commission
has heen appointed consisting of repre
sentatives of the Government, the paper
manufacturers, newspaper publishers and
hook publishers to pass on all complaints
formulated, and to investigate the entire
subject. In Spain wood pulp is reported
as having increased 85 per cent, since the
war began. More than half of the supply
of wood pulp in that country lias been
coming from Sweden, while Germany and
Norway furnished a considerable por
lion."
A few of the big paper mills of the
east have been forced to close on account
of the shortage in raw materials, and ad
vances never before heard of in the paper
world are causing daily as well as weekly
papers to advance all along the line.
Daily paper*-- have advanced their sub
scription rates and quite a number of
Georgia weeklies have been forced to do
the same thing. Just how long the
paper situation will be critical no one
knows, but all publishers an* facing a de
crease in profits and an advance in all ma
terials used, r.ot known in this country
befon*.
