TIMELY SUGGESTIONS i
FROM COUNTY AGENT

Spend a Day at Seleclirifi Seed Corn
| A day spent in selecting your seed
corn for next year may tie the most
profitable of the entire year’s work.
, Take a day before gathering the;
corn crop and go over the Held and |
select corn for seed to be used next |
season. You may know very little a
bout plant breeding but form your
! ideal as regards the ear, stalk and
[blade, and select such as come near
,esl lo it. Select more than you ex
pect to plant as you will want to
cull the ears after gathering and
husking. If you want a two-ear va-i
rioly. select stalks with two ears; if
one ear is wanted, select stalks with
one ear. Let the stalk be strong e
notigli to support the ears but not
over-sized. See that the ears are well
formed, not tapering from the large
end too much and well filled out. Af
ter husking you can improve the se
lection by careful grading. Cull out I
ears where the grains are loose on
tin- cob; also sucli as have too iarg"
cob in proportion to the size of
grain.
Plant your crop next year with
this selection and you will no doubt
notice a big improvement in your
whole corn crop. It will pay for It
know from experience. If you would
take the trouble to be more scien
tific, select the best six ears from I
the selection and plant a patch to
itself, going over same before the
polen ripens and cut out the tas- !
sets from stalks not properly form
ed and especially all barren stalks
and you will make still more im-j
provement.
Opportunity For Youny Farmers
The future of Walker county will |
depend on the young men of today.
As its wealth is dependent upon its
agriculture, the measure of the fit- j
ness of its young men to farm is the
measure of its prosperity in the fu
ture. There are numbers of young
men in the county who are neglect
ing Ihe opportunity to prepare
themselves to become more efficient,
farmers. Time is changing and the |
future of agriculture will demand
more efficiency in farming and thej
young man that realizes this fact;
and prepares himself will be the
more fortunate one. In view of the
fact that the importance of agricul
ture is being more and more recog
nized by the bankers and business
men nf tiie county, it is encouraging,
to the young man of today who is
trying to take advantage of its op— i
porlunities, by preparing himself to
keep pace with its progress. Walker
county hoys should wake up and|
take a lively interest in all lines of;
fanning.
