Entered at the LaFayetle, Ga.,
postoffice lor transmission through
3he mails as sccoud-elass matter.
This old world has too many
warships, which are liabilities and
too few good roads which are as
sets.
When a fellow tells you this
eriine wave is due to prohibition,
xsk him what made the frequent
erime waves when the country
was wet.
The depreciation and upkeep of
Ike vehicles in Walker county
the past two years, is estimated as
•xcced ng the total cost of the
$400,000 road bond issue. Who
pays for bad roads which caused
this depreciation and upkeep?
The tax payers.
It is an actual fact, not a theo
ry, that the $400,000 road bond
issue will lower the taxes of the
county tax payers, over $5.00 on
every one thousand dollars, or fif
ty cents on each hundred dollars.
If tax burdens are worrying you I
Vocalise of the road bond* issue,
Here is your chance to get rid of
a Lig purt of that burden.
Lawlessness is not the sentiment
A the people of \N alker county,
am. - never before in our history j
have the people been aroused as
to the part they must play in as
sisting the officers to enforce the
law, since the awful tradegy of a
few weeks ago. They are going to
know how the officers stand on
this great question, uud they are
going to support those officers
that they are assured are not lin
ed up with the lawless element in
lh : 4 county- The good people of
Walker county are determined to
»ee that this county is a safe place
in which to live, and that their
children and their neighbors
children have the protecron of the
taw. The interest the women are
taking in the issue is most note
worthy.
JUST WHAT ARE THE FACTS?
On the front page in this issue
ippears questions and answers,
pertaining to the $400,000 bond
mue, to be voted on Saturday
July 2nd.
The object of the road
bond committee in publishing this
questionnaire, is purely ft r the
purposcof information. Put in this
form the voters and tax payers of
she county have before them in a
concrete way the facts relating to
the issue.
Iu so far as is possible every
question and answer about the!“
bonds is asked and answered. Al-1
•o in this issue is published the
quota each militia district will re
ceive froip th 1t« d ssu > based on i
the tax values. Too, the policy of
the Hoard of Commissioners which
is a part of their minutes of June
7th., and which is open for inspec
tion to any and all people of the
county, is published this week.
The tax rate, how the money is.
to be used, who will handle the)
money,, how much each dstrict is
to receive, how the county will
share in state ami Federal aid, the
method of keeping the p 00,,., in
formed ns to the expenditure of
the money at all times etc., are
vital points that are made clear in
the questions and answers.
The opposition to the issue so
liar expressed comes from those]
| who as yet do not know the actual
1 facts regarding the bonds, and ev
en these people are very anxious
that they have full information.!
The people have the right to know ;
every detail of this issue, and it
is for this purpose that the ques-,
tions and answers have been pre- 1
pared. If any person after read-;
ing and studying the questions j
and answers is still in doubt as to
any feature of the bond issue, if
be will write to any member of
the Board of Commissioners, or
| write to 14. W- Herndon. LaFay
ette, Ga., full light and informa
tion will be gladly given.
When the people of Walker
county understand that it is true
that the taxes will be lbwered this
(year on account of the bond issue,
and that for road purposes the
taxes will be lowered from year
to year in the future, many will
see the wisdom of the issue at this,
time. It is a postive fact, not a
I theory or a fancy, or a mere talk
i ing point for bond, that the taxes
1 will be lowered. How taxes are
lowered is explained in the ques
; tions and answers.
If the bonds are not authorized
by the people on July 2nd., the
people will not face a lower tax
rate this year; in fact the taxes
| are likely to he higher. Therefore,
! if the tax question is bothering
you, it will he wise to get in’.u te
ed as to tbs bond issue.
The Road bond commit
tee is determined to see that every
voter lias the opportunity of be
ing fully informed on the bond is
sue, feeling that when the people
know the facts, they will realize
the wisdom of issuing bonds this
year.

GRIEVED AT SHERIFFS DEATH
ARDENTLY FOR ROAD BONDS
Ed Messenger:—
I was very sorry to learn of the
l untimely death of Sheriff A .G. Cat
iron. In his death Walker county has
i lust an efficient officer and a loyal
{citizen. I have noted through the
I Messenger, with admiration, the
! manner in which he has gone after
! the evil that has so long heset Walk
er county.
Mr. Catron proved himself worthy
of the trust in that he gave his I
life upholding the laws of the coun-l
ty. Although he did not face a Ger- (
man army he was as truly lighting
the cause of humanity as did the]
boys who fell over there and when]

{ fact when he is captured.
I wish,to extend my deepest sym
jpathy to his friends and loved ones.
I was glad to see in last week’s
I Messenger a call for a bond election
l in Walker and I hope the majority
{ are in favor of the issue. No county

Iroads, and I arn proud that Walker

other counties in building good

Crop prospecls were never bettr

with a drouth until yesterday when
we had a general rain fall of about
three inches which practically in
sures a bumper crop.
Financial conditions liavq shown
a marked improvement during the
past 00 days here and normal times
seem not far hence.
With best wishes to the Messenger
readers and their editor, I am,

BOY SCOUT MOVEMENT
FOR SEVENTH DISTRICT
The citizens of Walker county, if
they desire it, may soon have the
services of a Boy Scout Expert to
assist them in organizing Boy Soon
Troops in the communities. Recently
a group of represent alve citizens of
1 the Seventh district met in Rome
and decided, with the cooperation
of the varous counties of the dis
trict to secure the services of a dis
trict Executive to organize, develop
and supervise boyscout troops in the
district and .to train the necessary
leadership for putting scouting on
an effective basis.
The large cities of Georgia have
had splendid organized scout work
for a number of years but the Boy
Scout movement, with its character
building and citizenship training
program, s equally adapted to work
with boys in the smaller communi
ties of tYie state.
The amount necessary for putting
on this district executive, develop
ing a District Camp, holding train
ing conferences for Scout leaders,
and conducting various District
wide Scout, activities, will be raised
by the various counties that will be
benefltted through the service ren
dered. and a quota of *BOO.OO a year
has been given Walker county. This
is not a large quota, as compared
with amounts to be raised by the
larger counties of the District, and .
will a splendid investment in the de- ]
velopment and training of our
Walker county boys.
The value of the Boy Scout pro
gram has been officially recognized
J)y Congress and is enthusiastically
endorsed by ministers, educators
and others interested in boys, the
nation over. The scout program is
to be used in churches, schools and
all other community group! in sup
plementing and enriching their
work for boys.
Mr. Walter Shaw of LaFayette is
the county chairman for Walker
county and will be glad to furnish,
full information concerning the boy |
scout movement and plans for thts,
county.
