A decision was rendered by-the •Georgia Supreme Court last Friday, affirming the decision of the Super ior Court jury of this county As stated above the «»v«r boys Sailed Deputy Sherilf J W Morton <on Marcli 18th. A special term of Walker Superior Court was called fcy Judge Wright for April 17th to try the Bakers, and on account of cllne-ss of Judge W..ght, Judge Ir vin, of Codart own, presided. The lirkers were found guilty and sen tenced to hang on May 19th. A mo tion for a new trial was overruled Sty Judge Irvin in Rome on June MUi. and from that date until last Friday (he case was before the Su ga uue Court of Georgia. R M. W. Glenn and O. N. Cham bers, attorneys for the Bakers, when interviewed by the Messenger Wed nesday stated that they had no stale men! at this time to give out. Mr. •Chambers said that within a day or 4wo probably they would decide vdiether or not the defense would 3ask that the sentence be commuted is life imprisonment, or the Gov ernor sought for a pardon for the boys. • The date for the ex eeution of the Makers will be sei, sometime soon probably, as it, is understood that sentence must be carried out with in sixty days. Judge Wright, over <tl:c. telephone, Wednesday stated So the Messenger that he would call „ n Judge Irvin, who presided throughout the trial, to set the date for the Bakers to hang, but in the -■■venl he did not care to tlx the date that he, Judge Wright, would act. The Bakers are in the Floyd *•* iinly jail. "*■"'“ Halim* Glmmtu JERRY LEATH AVOIDS SERVING SENTENCE Jerry Leath, who was found guil ty of being interested in the manu facture of liquor in the Federal Court, sometime before the murder of Sheriff Catron in May 1921, but who lias successfully avoided serv ing his jail sentence in the county jail here of four months up to the present time, is still successful in avoiding serving his sentence. He was to begin serving Ibis short sen tence on Dec. Ist, according to Sher iff Harmon, who states that lie lia,s leceived commitment papers from tiie Federal Court anil that Jerry has been notified. For some reason however, Leath has not shown up end unless he makes his appearance soon, doubtless Federal officers will take charge of tho case. II will lie recalled I hat Jerry’s son Hen Leath, plead guilty to the man ufacture of liquor before the Fed i riil Court. Both Leaths have had cases pending in the state courts for violation of the prohibition laws led up to the present have escaped Dial. HUMAN R. WRIGHT DIED [AST THURSDAY MORNING After a few days illness, Allman R Wright, aged 76 years, passed a way at the home of his brother, Paul D. Wright, last Thursday morning at ) 1 o’clock. The deceased is survived by four brothers and two sisters as fol lows: Judge Moses Wright, Hon. Seaborn Wright, of Rome; 11. T. Wright, of Chattanooga and Paul D. Wright, of this city; Mrs S S King and Miss Addie Wright, of Rome. He was a soil of the late Hon. Au gustus Wright. The deceased was born and reared in Rome and left I here in early manhood for Tenn essee,' where he was a successful farmer until some two years ago when he moved to LaFayette, where he lived with his brother until his demise last Thursday morning. Fuinfral services were held from the residence of Mr and Mrs Paul Wright Thursday niglil at 7:30, in the presence of a number of rela tives and friends, conducted by the three pastors of the town, Revs. J p Anderson. I S Leonard and J W Brinsfield. Friday morning the re mains were taken to Home and laid to rest in Myrtle Hill cemetery, fol lowing brief funeral services at 9 o’clock in which Dr. J E Sammons, pastor of f lie First Baptist church of Rome officiated. The burial was attended by a large number of relatives and friends from this, Chattooga and Floyd counties, and all members of the family from Rome. A beautiful llrral pall covered the casket. Jr. .Missionary .Meetiiiji The ladies of Ihe Kensingt on Methodist Womans’ Missionary So ciety met at the home of Mrs Dr. Wood on Dec. 12th. The full enrollment of the so ciety was present except two. It was the last session for the current year. Much interest and en thusiasm was manifested over the reports of the outgoing officers and the election of new ones. Mrs. Ruth Lee was re-elected president and Mrs Taylor, Ihe pas tor’s wife was made vice-president. During the social hour at the close of the meeting the ladies were ushered into the dining room where the host served delicious refresh ments. LaFayette LAF AYETTE, GEORGIA, FRIDAY DECEMBER 29, 1922. 21 Eat Christmas Dinner With Sheriff and Mrs. Harmon at County Jail Outside of a family re-union, probably Sheriff and Mrs Harmon had more guests to partake of a de licious Xmas dinner than any fam ily in the county. Officially, their family numbered 21 on that day at the jail, all hungry, some sad, some care-free, some indifferent, some worried, but all hungry. Twenty one are awaiting the February term of Court or some other means of escape from the steam heated coun ty jail. Several raids and arrests are re tail ted by the Sheriff and his depu ties the past several days, includ ing the holidays, and brief recital of same will be found below. On last Friday a still was raided on Johns Mt., where 2500 gallons of beer and 20 gallons of whisky and other whisky-making ingredients and paraphernalia were destroyed. Also last week L If Mathis and Raymond Peppers, son of Ab Pep in rs, who is under bond for dealing in liquor, were caught at the foot of the reservoir hill in West LaFay ette on the 23rd m..1 placed in jail on the charge of having liquor in I heir possession. Matlijs is in jail a waiting a soft-hearted bondsman, while Peppers’ bond was signed by 1 ester Little and lie was released. Ollie Parrish was arrested by Chief Williams, of Chickamauga, on the 2ft h upon the charge of having liquor in his possession and was placed in jail. On Xmas day Lee MRS: J. B. RANSOM, AGED 62 ID WEDNESDAY NIGHT i Mrs. J B Ransom, aged 62 years, cla d at her home on Cherokee Ave., at 7 o'clock Wednesday Night, fol lowing a lingering illness. She is survived by three sons— William, Sam and George Ransom and a daughter, Mrs Lee Parker, .ill of this city. Funeral services will he hel l this afternoon at Mt. Carmel, conducted by Rev. 1 S Leonard, at 2:30 o’clock, after which her body will he laid lie side that of her husband who pre ceded her to the grave some live years ago. Mrs. Ransom was a member of lite Christian church, was a devoted mother, and was loved for her ge nial disposition and womanly vir tues. At 2 o’clock Mon day afternoon every street was lined with cars and the square was filled with people from every sec tion of this county. KNIGHT TEMPiAR XMAS SERVICE VERY IMPRESSIVE ■ -y- . ———y The Christmas service of the Chas. Martel Commandery Knights Templar, of last Sunday afternoon at the high school auditorium, was one of the. best services of its kind ever held here. Unite a number of Ivuighis, their families and friends attended as well as the Knights from LaFayette. A splendid crowd d townspeople turned out for the service. The Keese orchestra of Chatta nooga, together with a large cho rus of local voices furnished the music, which was a rare treat. Vue musical program \yas considerably superior to any of previous oca si. ns of this kind, and the local com ’nut tee on arrangements desire to publicly express appreciation for ihe splendid co-operation of lli» choirs of the churches and for the wonderful music furnished for the occasion, which added so much to I he, exercises. He,. W A Simmons preached the Christmas sermon, a plain, simple, piuclical. everyday gospel sermon, which stirred Ids hearers and made a profound impression. He took for lux text, “I Am Doing A Great Work,” and from this theme he de veloped a soul-inspiring sermon. All in all il was a most delightful service and those who had a part m making it such a success deserve much credit for their splendid ef f.rt s. PARKIN ANO BOSS GRANTED NEW TRIAL Partain and Boss who were con victed in Walker Superior Court on the charge of murder, and sentenc ed by the jury to life imprisonment and whose attorneys filed a motion for new Inal before Judge Wright, '\ere granted a new trial according to the decision of Judge Wright on Dec. 22nd. The Judge in passing on tin' motion for a new trial, staled that the new trial was granled on the ground that, he, Judge Wright, had erred in his charge lo the jury. J. H. DUNN PASSED AWAY AFTER LINGERING ILLNESS V J II Dunn passed away at his homo in West LaFayette Sunday night at 7:12 o’clock. He had been ii declining health for more than two years, and for the past year Dad been confined lo h i s room most of the time. He was 67 years of age. Surviving him besides his widow arc six daughters—Mrs Hilly Spray berry. Mrs W J Jennings, Mrs S A Napier, Mrs E M Littlejohn, Mrs If C Taylor and Miss Annie Dunn, all ol this county. Also ten grandchild ren survive him. Mr. Dunn was born in Alabama and moved to LaFayette some thir teen years ago. where he and his family have made a host of warm friends, who mourn the death of Ibis good man. Early in life lie pro fessed a faith in Christ and united with the Methodist church, whore he lived a consistent Christian life until the end Sunday night. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows fraternity. Funeral services wen* held from Mt. Carmel Mqthodist church Mon day afternoon at 3 o’clock in the j,.' eeeiice of a large number of rel atives and ffifties'. Rev. J W Brins ii<*!d and Rev. 1 H Leonard officiated. Representatives from all the col leges where Walker students are attending will be present and have a part in the program. Colleger and high school banners, pennants, col lege yells and colors ;in fact the whole atmosphere will breath of the enthusiasm of college spirit Those who are planning for Ihe occasion say that they have assur arces that large delegations are coming from Chickamauga and Ce dar Grove, and it is certain that a large crowd from I.a Fayette will attend. All alumni of schools and colleges are rei|uesled to wear their college colors, and special reservation of seats will he made, so that groups from the various- colleges may sit together for the purpose of yelling, singing and pulling the various col lege stunts. Mrs. Westbrook is the attractive ml accomplished daughter of Mr. ai d Mrs J R Roper, of Villanow, Ga, and u most prominent and suc cessful teacher, now holding a posi tion in the high school of Jellico T< nn.
