Kmtrything has been getting

A KNOWLEDGE OF
WALKER COUNTY
One of the biggest assets to
Walker county would be for her
people to know their county, not as
a general proposition but have in
timate and detailed information as
to the county and its life.
A condition of growth is made
possible first by accurate know-
Hedge. To know her possibilities ac
tually, what she is capable of be
coming, to understand her laws,
her government, how the affairs
are administered, her strength, her
weaknesses, is to know how to bet
ter solve her problems and how to
plan more wisely for her develop
ment.
In our schools her history, her
poetry, her people, her religion,
her educational life, her govern
ment, her agriculture, her indus
trial standing, her every operation
would offer a most intensely in
teresting, profitable and enlight
ening study course.
To know our problems from all
angles helps us solve those prob
lems satisfactorily. Instead of de
bating all the time in our high
schools questions of National and
International moment, let seme of
the debates deal with home ques
tions. Then the young man or wo
man becomes familiar with his own
county and her needs, and then
right conclusions will be arrived at
and better service rendered.
How many people know the pop
ulation of our county, how many
schools and of what grade they are,
how many acres of land in culti
vation, the types of soil, what pro
ducts our manufacturing enter
prises are turning out, the laws
governing our county, the election
laws, the materials for road build
ing, coal deposits and other miner
als, our mountains and streams?
These things may seem puerile to
some, but the facts of our great
county should be known and in
stilled into our youth, and then a
greater appreciation will follow, a
deeper love for our section will be
cultivated, and our own bright
young men and women will turn
their educated minds and conse
crated hearts to a larger program
of development of old Walker
county—a county that has no su
perior in potential development in
t)he South or anywhere.
The pride of birth, the pride of
section, the pride of knowledge is
not only justifiable but stimulates
greater and more effective effort.
When we can truthfully say we
are proud of Walker county, and
her people because we know her
and love her and know what she is
capable of becoming, then we
have come far on the way of the
best citizenship, and until we do
find ourselves in love with her, we
cannot do our boat by her, and the
best way to develop that love for
her is to know her in all her mani
fold ways.
It is a study worthy of us all and
one that wall prove profitable, in
spiring and fascinating.
A big noise has been sounding
around the Constitution office and
in quarters of the state about the
McAdoo convention, which no mat
ter whose right or in proper form
or whatnot, dosen’t as Goldberg
says .amount to anything.
