MBS. A. B. SCOGGINS
In memory of Mr*. A. E. Sesgg.na
who was a charter ms'nbcr of the W.
M. U. Society.
We feel the loss of her who was so
cheerful, faithful and r?idy to help
carry the motto “To do all the good
she could, in all th.> ways sh* could,
to all the people she could, and in all
our meetnigs there will hi a vacant
seat.
We watched through her illness an I
saw her gradually grow weaker. So
| peaceful was the hour of her depsr
| ture that those in watching scarcely
j knew when the death angel came. In
a conversation shortly before her
death she spoke of her afflictions.
That she had hoped to be restored to
health again but it was the workings
of God and she was resigned to His
will.
Resolved, that while we do deeply
mourn our loss and our hearts are
sore because of the vacant seat in our
meetings, which no one else can fill,
yet we bow in humble submission to
the will of God and thank him for her
life and the work He permitted her to
do among us. That with our tenderest
sympathies extended, we commend
God’s allsufficient grace to the be
reaved and sorrowing husband and
daughter.
The hands that have toiled in patient
love,
We must fold to clasp no more,
Till we pass the portals of light above
And tread the Eternal Shore.
But they’ll beckon and wait at Hea
ven’s gate,
Beckon for us to come.
And share the bliss of that rich
estate,
In the mansions of love at home.

Hudson Victim of Mutineers.
| The flrst navigators who sailed on
I voyages of discovery to the new world
hod no easy tusk to control the adven
turous crews who manned their vessels,
says the Detroit News. The troubles
thut Columbus had to face are well
known. Magellan was called upon to
pur down mutiny among his crew and
rebellion among his officers. Rut to
Henry Hudson, discoverer of the river
that bears his name, fell the sad fate
of being overpowered by mutineers and
sent to certain doom at sea. The year
following his discovery of Hudson bay
and Hudson strait, his crew rebelled
and, seizing Hudson and eight others,
bound them and set them adrift In a
small boat on Hudson hay, June 23,
1011. They were never heard from
again.
Indian Infant Death Rate.
The infant death rate among pre
historic American Indians was high,
M. W. Sterling, ethnologist of the
United States National nfuseum, con
cludes from his recent exploration of
undent town sites discovered by him
near Mobrldge, S. D. About three
baby skeletons were found to every
adult skeleton discovered. An al
most complete mummy of an
eight-montlm-ohl child was among the
finds. The body bad been accidentally
mummified through the action of cop
per salts. Copper ornaments buried
with the baby to accompany It into
the next world, Mr. Sterling explained,
had served to preserve Its body in this
world. An adult body, similarly pre
served, was also found.
The Pilgrimage.
When the faithful followers of Mo
liumined readi the Holy City on a pil
grimage they must be garbed in seam
less cloth, must have four bntks be
fore they go to Idss the black stone,
then must travel seven times about
the city, three times running and four
times walking, then must run up and
down some of the sacred hills, then
must go to Mount Ararat, stand on
the summit ail afternoon and repeat
their prayers, then return to Mecca,
on the way stopping at a village to
sacrifice a goat, a sheep or a camel,
then cast seven stones at each of
seven cairns. Then they may shave
and cut their nails, the pilgrimage
having been concluded. Ohio State
Journal.
The Cotton Gin.
The cotton-gin was a machine In
vented by Eli Whitney in 1793, by
which the cotton-wool is separated
from the seed and cleaned with great
rapidity and ease. This Invention led
to such an increase in the cultivation
of this staple that the United States
soon exported one and one-half million
pounds of cotton annually. Previous
to tiie Invention of the cotton gin the
work was done by hand and proved to
be a tedious process, since one per
son could clean only a pound or so a
day. The invention of the cotton gin
gave slavery the most powerful and
insidious impulse that It ever re
ceived.
A Change of Air.
Hiram Skinnum was the village
tightwad. He walked on - Ills neigh
bor’s front lawns to save his shoes.
His wife had been ailing for years,
and began growing weaker. There
didn't seem to be much .wrong with
her except living with Hiram, but she
sank so that at last be called the doc
tor. After long examination tiie doc
tor told Hiram: “She needs a change
of air. Send her away.” Hiram
thought over the expense awhile and
said: “Doe, you say she needs a
change of air. I can't afford to send
her away. Rut I'll tell ye what I'll
do. I'll get her an electric fan.”
Speed of Radio.
You may not believe this, but it's
true. A speaker in New York is heard
by a radio fan In San Francisco be
fore he is heard by the people in his
own audience at the back of the hall
in New York. Tills is because the au
dience hears by sound waves which
travel only 1,126 feet a second, while
the radio fan hag the sound brought
to him by vibrations traveling 180,000
miles a second. The difference in
hearing time in this case is only a
fraction of a second, hut it's as un
canny as it's hard to believe.—Ex

Still Protester.
One of a party of men left ills sent
In an already crowded train to go in
search of something to eaf, leaving a
rug to reserve his place. On return
ing he found that, In spite of the rng
and the protests of fellow-passengers,
the seat had been usurped by a wom
an. With flashing eyes she turned
upon him: “Do you know, sir, that I
am one of the directors’ wives?”
“Madam," he replied, “were you the
director's only wife 1 should still pro
test.”
