BATTLEFIELD OF ANTIETAM
VISITED BY LOCAL MARINES
Washington, D. C. Sept. 9—View
ing the old battlefield, where the ar
mies of McClellan and l.ee fought for
supremacy in the Civil War, nearly a
hundred young men from Georgia,
some of whom are from I-a Fayette or
nearby places, are with the U. S. Ma
rines who traveled afoot and by mo
tor trucks 125 miles from their bar
racks at Quantico, Va., near here, to
hold field exercises at Antietam.
On this historic spot near Sharps
burg, Md., the Marine Corps Expe
ditionary Force commanded by Briga
dier General Dion Williams, is re-en
acting some of the incidents of the
famous battle, using modern military
weapons while skirmishing over the
ground where the blue and gray sol
diers fought in 1862.
Field exercises, reviews, parades,
and visits to nearby points of interest I
form a lively program of events, I
which will end when the force returns [
to Quantico late this month, after an i
absence of nearly four weeks. The!
Marines will encamp overnight at se
lected places along the route.
