Os Chickamauga

Chickamauga, (ra. Sept. 17—Rev.
G. W. McClure delivered a splendid
sermon at the First Baptist uhureh
Sunday evening which was of special
interest to the young people of the
community who are leaving this week
for College. His subject was “Educa
tion” and in it he set forth the ideals
to be attained by them at the various
institutions of learning. In the audi
ence were many young people who
were greatly benefited by the sermon.
This section will have quite l a number
of students at the various colleges
this year which speaks well for the
school spirit of the community.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Pres
byterian church held a very interest
ing meeting with Mrs. E. H. Wyatt
and Mrs. Mattie Trippe at their home
near here Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. J.
L. Rowland, President of the Auxil
iary presided at the meeting and gave
the devotional from the 21st Chapter
of St. John. The program which relat
ed to Japan was in charge of Mrs An
nie Edwards who read a splendid pa
per on the Missionary work in Japan.
Mrs. E. H. Wyatt gave a paper which
told of the school work in Japan, that
was very interesting. Mis* Lucilo
Donegan was a visitor at the meeting.
After the program a social hour was
enjoyed during which a delicious ice
course with cake was served by Mrs.
Wyatt assisted by Miss Donegan. The
next meeting will be with Mrs. J. M.

Class of the Methodist, church enjoy
ed an outing Monday evening. , The
party chaperoned by the teachers .'f
the classes motored to Chickamauga
Park where a weiner roast was ,"en
joyed before returning home.
Mias Maxie Smith left Wednesday
for Athens, Ala., where she will be a
member of the faculty of the Young
Woman’s College ait that place.
Cecil Murdock and Guy Welch will
leave Saturday for Macon where they
will continue t.heir studies at .Mercer
University.

continue his studies at Vanderbilt. Mr
Smith will join his family in Nash
ville later. Friends of the Smith fam
ily regret their departure from this
place where they have lived for u
number of years.
Misses Marian Henderson, Myrtis
Dunaway, Lorena Littlejohn, J. C.
Wyatt, Jack Mason, Howard Prince
and several others from this section
will attend the University of Chatta
nooga which formally opens next
Monday.
Misses Agnes Porter, Narciissa
Jones and Katherine Wheeler left
Wednesday for LaGrange where they
will enter LaGrange Female College.
Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Camp left Sat
urday for Richmond, Va., where they
will enter school.
Charles Rudicil will attend the Bay
lor school in Chattanooga this year.
Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Wheeler were
•called to Atlanta Friday by the death
of the latter’s brother, W. H. Smith,
who died suddenly at his home there.
Mrs. Wheeler has the sympathy of
the entire community in her sad be
reavement.
Dr. D. G. Elder has opened his of
fice over the Chickamauga Drug Store
and has eqipped it with an Electro
Therapeutic Radium Cabinet which
cures many diseases. The community
should be very glad to have such a
wonderful treatment at home.
Mrs. Eva Howard and Miss Cecil
Camp have purchased the “Surprise
Shop” at this place which was formal
ly owned by Mrs. E. F. Camp.
Miss Sarah Brotherton is ill at her
home on Wilder Ave.
Bud Jones, of Tulsa, Okla. has ar
rived for a visit to friends and rela
tives in this section and has been the
guest the past week of Mr. and Mrs.
John Jones in the Pond Springs Dis
trict.
G. W. Shea ram, the hiking veteran
who has hiked to several Confederate
reunions is here for a few days stay
with relatives. He has just arrived
from Los Angeles having traveled a
cnoss the country in a remarkably
short time. He is enroute to Tampa,
Fla., where he will spend the winter.
He is now nearing his 85th birthday
and is hale and hearty.
Mr. and Mrs Arch Osborne of Chat
tanooga were spend-the-day guests
Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dyer.
Mrs. E. M. Goodson is improving
from her recent illness U> the delight

ing the evening.
Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Clarkson an- j
nounce the birth of a daughter whom
they have christened Mildred Marie.
Mrs. J. C. Morgan and Mrs. J. V.
liewis, of St. Elmo were the spend
the day guests of Mrs. Margaret
Morgan Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Bryan, Jr.,
of Huntsville, Ala., and Mrs. Sallie
Hughes of Chattanooga spent the
past week in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Morgan at Pond Spring.
She left Saturday to visit Mr. and
Mrs. E. M. Colbert at LaFayette.
Misses Ida Callahan, Rose Ila O’-
Connor and Nell Rogers of Chatta
nooga were the week-end guests of
Miss Cecil Camp.
Mrs. A. H. Bradley is ill at her
home here..
Miss Mary Zimmerman left Satur
day for Cedartown where she will
spend several days with friends.
Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Harp and child
ren were the guests Sunday of rela
tives at Trion.
Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Doak and child
ren speint Sunday at Tunnel Hill
where they enjoyed a family reunion
and birthday dinner at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Howard.
Dr. H. F. Shields was called to
Boynton Tuesday by the death of his
aged grandmother, Mrs. Martha Park
Jones.
Mrs. W. H. Helton has returned
from Ft. Payne Ala. where she was
called by the illness of her father.
Mr. and Mrs. James Bird have re
turned from Florida where they went
several weeks ago for Mr. Bird’s
health. The Floida climate did not a
gree with him and they will reside
here.
Quite a number from this place at
tended the annual reunion of the
Pierce family which was held at the
home of C. B. Pierce near Rock
Spring Sunday. One hundred and six
relatives of the family wire present
together with a number of visitors. A
barbecue dinner was a feature of the
day and this was supplemented with
a variety of eatables which were

not only for the dinner hour but
plenty was left for the evening meal.
The day was happily spent by all
present.
Community House Activities—
The Rainbow Sunday School class
enjoyed an outing to Warner’s Park
Saturday afternoon. A chicken supper
was spread before returning home
and a delightful social time enjoyed.
About twenty two members of the
class went on the outing and on re
turning home a pleasant time was
spent at the community house. Mrs.
Lucy B. Jones is teacher of this class
which meets every Sunday at the Bap
tist church.
Dr. J. H. Hammond will lx- at the
community house next Saturday at 11
a. m. where he will vaccinate for the
prevention of smallpox. Everyone in
the community in need of this treat
ment is urged to come.
H. L. Madaris has opened a store in

Mrs. Lily Parker of LaFayette was
the guest the past week of Mr. and
Mrs. 1). F. Abercrombie.
Mrs. 1.. F. Coker was called to Chat
tanooga Monday by the illness of her
daughter, Miss Christine Coker.
Mrs. Clyde Lewis has purchased a
part of the J. L. Brotherton farm at
Pond Springs. Mr. Hawkins, of Cal
houn, has purchased the Lewis farm.
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Rudy and Mr.
