Emerson said, “Every greai
institution is but the lengthen
ed shadow of one man.” This
old world of ours, round like a
ball and slightly flattened at the
pole fends, goes driving on in its
accustomed way. They some
times seem to be going from bac
to worse, and wrongs there ar
which ought to be righted am
questions there are which neec
solution. We begin to awake
and find that we have ben drift
ing through a wilderness. Then
it is we begin to cast about us ts
find a leader to lead us into ths
land of promise.
In some small Bethlehem-likc
place always is found a Saviom
who shall prove a way-shower
How long have we gone on in om
slip-shod agricultural ways, hac
not some real forceful thinker:-
risen up here and there, teach
ing u" that there was somethinf
better for the man who tills the
soil. A few years ago, in a little
obscure country village, Charles
E. Barrett was working day ii
and day out for his and the com
munity’s good. Somehow w*
have always been rather prouc
when we were called teacher, for
we remember the united and hu
manizing force of a real teacher
A country teacher may be, often
is, a larger-browed person thar
we are aware of. Mr. Barrett
was both a teacher and a farm
er, and what higher titles should
any man wish?
A man with ideas is always in
dema**^. In fact, the worldAeeds
^rotlnng as much as it needs
ideas; real sensible ideas. To
the man with ideas there always
comes a just reward—wealth,
fortune, honor. Mr. Barret had
ideas, real, true, practical ideas.
He believed that the farmer
ought to get his share of the
good things of life. He thought
much, and his thinking led him
to the conclusion that there was
a great work to be done, if the
farmer came into his own a
mong men. Lo, for we believe
Mr. Barrett has wrought wisely
and well. Much has been accom
plished, and we seem to be only
beginning. We understand that
Mr. Barrett and the organiza
tion for which he has so faithful
ly labored, has not been the only
force tending to work out a
greater life for the farmer, but
we do realize that he and his
cause have been one of the
strongest.
One has only to be casual ob
server to see that there isa great
awakening in agricultural mat
ters. It all will ultimate in hap
pier homes, more prosperous
conditions, greater progress,
more and better education, a
grander and greater country.
SCHOOLS AND ROADS.
Zny one who has thought a
bout the matter at all knows
that our schools are far from
that high standard of efficiency
and usefulness which it is our
right to expect. Many reasons
might be given for this unpleas
ant truth. One that is apparent
is that our schools are too small
and too many. We need consoli
dation. But consolidation would
me^n inconvenience to many,
and a deprivation of school ad
vantages to a few, unless we
could provide proper conveyan
ces for children. It would be
come almost imperative that we
nave better roads. It is not
■necessary to point out the many
■reasons why we need better i
■*oads; this every intelligent cit
■zeh knows.
■ Good roads we must and will 1
nave. The working out of this <
tactical problem is a much <
we weighty matter. In all fair- 1
K, the commissioners have 1
■ unusual conditions with*
ing made. But we should watS
the road question closely be^ndse
it is one of such great impor
tance to every man, woman ar.il
child in the county.
The keeping up of our roads v/ii'
ce a heavy burden until tnere ff

Che Bulletin will undertake to do
everything possible to advertis*
;he good things about Wilkinson
ounty in such way that we may
nduce a desirable clasp of c. ti
ens to cast their lot with us and
o help us build up the waste
daces. Wilkinson county will
ome again to a place among the
jest. In this undertaking we
aeed you, man of Wilkinson. D
rou say, let us make t’ns one o
the banner counties, if not the
banner county? It can be done
OUR FRIENDS.
We have been glad of the op
portunity to meet and shake
hands with so many of oui
friends, the citizens of Wilkin
son county, this week. It has
uforded us an oppoitunity V
ell a good number about on
leavers to make the Bulletin th

lad many pleasant greetings,

ions. We want you to know thai
nean business, and that we want

ried to impress you with the
’act that we are going to do ev

THE HOME TOWN.
Say, Mr. Man, honest now, de
r ou really want to see your home
own prosper? Then is it a fine
dan to say that it is the poorest
■own ever? Quit saying it, i
you do. First, prove it is not

CROP OUTLOOK.
In spite of the adverse condi
tions, the indications are that
our farmers are planning more
intelligently than ever before for
t great harvest this fall. There
is no doubt that many farmers
will diversify this year. Cotton
will be plated, of course, and we
may exoect a good crop. Yet
more attention is being paid to
food crops and stock raising.
We predict that this will be a
bright and most prosperous year
'or Wilkinson county, and we be
'ieve it will. It is encouraging
to meet the farmers from the
different communities and hear
them discuss plans for this year.
Let us strive to make this the
banner year.
MR. PLAYER.
A public officer, is supposed to
be a public servant. This should
be true in deed and in truth. The
word service has a beautiful sug
^est:on of the meaning and pur
oose of life. Your officers hold
uppermost in their minds the
idea of filling the office so full
with the idea of doing for the
public a service that would tend
in the direction of all that is
highest and best in civic life,
rather than be possessed of the
idea of selfish personal gain, pol
itics would then be a high and
noble calling.
The right to cast a ballot is
a sacred one, and in the exercise
of this right be should be actuat
ed by the desire to see the best
end most efficient man in office.
Our men should be, like Caesar’s
wife, above reproach, clean,
manly, j.ust and fearless. We
feel that we have many fine and
manly gentlemen in the race this
year. One of them, Mr. Leon
Player, the present incumbent
of the Sheriff’s office, we know
-ery intimately. We commend
Mr. Player as a young man of
exceptionally fine character. We
believe he possesses all those
rare and manly traits in well
balanced proportions, that will
make him a most efficient and
manly officer. You that have
known him and have watched
him in the discharge of his du
ty, both before and since the
death of his father, may judge
of his actions. If the voters see
fit to continue him in office, we
believe he will never give you
cause to regret your choice.
