CRIME AND ITS CAUSE
Rev. W. A. Huckabee in a re
cent communication made some
very wise and pertinent remarks
upon the Allen disturbance, and
gives us the cause, Rev. Mr.
Huckabee was born and reared
in the mountains of North Geor
gia and has first had knowledge
of that beautiful region. He
says, “When a boy, uneducated
as I was. I saw the trouble and
the remedy. Sin’and ignorance
constituted the trouble. And
Christian, education, I saw as the
the remedyj” Commentipgjur
ther upon the gre^jd^Snge that
has come iiL North Georgia, he
hesitate to say
' that the great change in the in
telectual and moral condition cf
North Georgia is due more to
three schools than any other in
fluence. But for them the fueds
of Kentucky and the outlawry
of the Virginia mountains would
be repeated continually. Instead
of our mountainers being a men
ace to our commonwealth, they
add largely to the material and
and moral intellectual force of
ihe State.”
The schools to which Rev.
Huckabee refers are Young Har
ris, the schools at Waleska and
Morgantown. Those familiar
with educational conditions in
Georgia now and before the es
tablishment of these schools
know how much we are indebted
to them. North Georgia is an
other section altogether because
of their influence.
Continuing Rev. Huckabee
says, “I can’t help feeling a
strong sympathy for the Allens
and those connected with them.
In their isolation for generations
they have grown up under a code
of laws of their own. This code
has been handed down from fa
ther to son, and they have been
taught to, if need be, die by it.
They are as brave men as ever
walked the earth. No braver
men ever fought in any war than
those Blue Ridge mountainers.
They are of ths best and purest
Anglo-Saxon blood.”
Rev. Huckabee’s contention is
that Christian education would
directed the lives of these men
into different channels of thought
and action; that by proper train
ing they would have been useful
citizens, adding to the happiness
'of the world rather than being
a .burden upon Society. This is
true conception.
Your bad man is often the man
whose splendid energies have
been misdirected or not directed
at all. Your so called bad boy
wheh you unthinkingly call the
tough incorrigible fellow is the
boy with the splendid possibilities
for a superb and beautiful man
hood. Often the worst man is
the opposite of what ought to be
the best man. Education has for
its aim the tracing out and the
directing the latent energies of
I the individual, the directing the
I energies along useful lines.
I Thus the man is evolved.
■ We have made the remark be
g fore that ignoranco is the most
U costly thing in the world, the one
U thing we cannot afford. The
S Allen tragedy will cost that one
county in Virginia more than
$50,000, and no one yet knows
how many lives and how much;
sorrow and suffering, Suppose
that county had spent that' much
money for the establishment of a
school like one of the school men
tioned in North Georgia, and sup
pose this had been done years
ago. Think you not the chances
of such a tragedy had been les
sened? From the standpoint of
economy education pays greater
dividends than any other invest
ment.
In the broadest and deepest
sense everything in the last anal- i
ysis is education, and thorough
education, a complete education:
must come the solution of all
things and the realization of the
good arid the happiness there is
for every one. Lest we 1 e mis
understood we use the word
“education” in no narrow sense,
The college graduate may fall
far short of the ideal conception
of an educated man. Education
is a search for truth. The great
Teacher said “Ye shall know the
truth and the truth shall make
you free.” Free from what? Do
you remember the familiar line?
“There is no darkuess but ignor
ance.” When we become into a
knowledge of truth, we shall see
that there is for each one of us
plenty, joy peace and the good
things necessary to our well be
ing. And as we seek to find it
truth will free us from the limit
ation of believing we must of
. necesity commit crjmes, lie, steal
_ kiU^ We Avill rafhosee that in
stead. We can only find peace
by working out the greatest good
for all.
Every thinking man and wo
man in the world owes it to him
self and others to help to lessen
the crime, sorrow and suffering
of the world by doing all in his
or her power for true education.
Were this done this old world
would be transformed and be
made new.
PISTOL CARRYING
Apropos of what we have said
above, we wish we could reprint
an editorial of recent date ap
pearing in the Macon News. The
News points out the alarming
conditions in Macon, caused by
use of the ever ready pistol. No
one familiar with the facts doubts
that there is cause for alarm
throughout Georgia.
The News pertinently ask:
“What is it that seemingly
prompts the possesor of a pistol
with the impulse to kill and
causes him to be so ready to put
the impulse into execution?”. Is
it not a logicial consequence and
conciusion of the condition that
permit of an entire population
having and carrying these deably
guns about their persons without
any virtued hindrance or objec
tion of the practice on the part
of the law?”
Continuing the News asys,
“What is the purpose and use of
a pistol? Is it not to take life?”
Reader, can you answer this ques
tion? The editor can not see any
other use or purpose of the dead
ly gun.
In vain the unheeded human
tarian petition is going up from
a see ningly insensate earth that
the pistol carrying habit be sur
pressed, The law should be more
rigidly enforced. But better we
should so train our youths and
instill into them manliness so
that they would be ashamed to be
caught with a pistol. Fatherg,
if you have the interest of your
boy at heart and If you love your
fellow man, show him that there
is a maniljer, an l r a a better
way than carrying pistols.
OLD VETERANS
Only eighty three old veterans,
of which number twenty seven
are indigent, are now on the
pension roll of this county. Not
many more summers will pass be
fore the fine old boys will have
answered the last call. We can
but hope that those years may be
filled with joy and all good things
for them. Wonder how many
will visit Macon in May. We
wish they could all go and have
the time of their lives.
Announcements
FOR SOLICITOR _
To the Voters of the Dublin Ju
dicial Circuit:
I am a candidate for the office
>f solicitor general of the Dublin
judicial circuit, subject to the re
sult of the primary election to
be held in 1912. In event of my
: election I shall strive to dis
charge the duties of the office
rigidly, impartially and faith
fully.
I belive that a solicitor should
prosecute the rich and the poor,
; the high and low alike. No
man’s money, nor his social or
; political standing should be used
ito defeat the ends of justice;
that all who violate the law
should be made to endure its
penalty.
I am in favor of abolishing
the fee system, placing solici
tors general on a salary, run
ning the courts with dispatch
ind economy, strict and due en
forcement of the law, rigid ob
servance of the election law,
stamping out and forever oblit
erating the use of liquor and
money in elections; a healthy
sentiment that is the exponent
of the honesty and supremacy
of law and good government.
I respectfully solicit the suf
frage of ail the voters of the
circuit.
Yours truly,
E. L. STEPHENS.
FOR JUDGE.
Dublin, Ga., Jan. 1, 1912.

J. E. BURCH.
TO THE WHITE VOTERS OF
WILKINSON COUNTY.
I am a candidate to succeed
myself as judge of the Dublin
Circuit. The primary will oc
cur next August, but as the
dockets of the Superior courts
of this Circuit contain many
cases, and as I shall endeavor to
catch up the business of the
courts, I may not have an op
portunity of seeing you and dis
cussing with you in person, the
matter of my candidacy; there
fore I write this card.
I held the position as judge
of the city court of Dublin for
three years, during which time
the dockets and minutes of that
court show that more cases
were tried, and more business
disposed of than in any four
years prior to the time I went
on the bench.
I shall strive to discharge the
duties of judge of the Superior
courts fairly and impartially, do
equal rights to the poor and the
rich, dispose of the business as
rapidly as I can, with as little
expense to the county and as lit
tle trouble and annoyance to
the people as possible. If I do
this, should I be defeated after
only ofle year’s service? If I
do this, am I not entitled, as a
matter of fairness and right to
a full term of four years.?
Sincerely yours,
K. J. HAWKINS.
