SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING
by Rev, Gordon C, King.
LENT
Second of Series
Tertullian tells how these penitents
conducted themselves: They lai in
sackcloth and ashes, disfiguring their
bodies with neglected uncleanliness,
and dejected their minds *with grief;
used no other food but what was nec
essary to keep up lite; they frequently
nourished their prayers w th vigorous
fasting; they groaned, they went to
the Lord day and night; they fell down
at the feet of the presbyters; they
kneeled to the friends of God; they
begged their fellow Christians to pray
for them.
The penitents willingly submitted
to this to show their humiliation.
When they had thoroughly repented,
the priests examined them to see if
their repentance was genuine, and, if
so, they were readmitted to the Church
and to the sacraments of the Church.
Os course, only public penitents did
this. The faithful are not required to
do this at the beginning of Lent.
But gradually a symbolical service
was introduced into the worship of the
Church which involved even the
faithful. It was thought proper to re
mind even the faithful at the begiu
ning of Lent, that they were but
dust and ashes. The priest would take
ashes, bless them, sprinkle them with
holy water. The worshipers would be
asked to come to the altar. Ihey wou
ld come in sackcloth The priest would
take up some of the ashes on the ends
of his fingers, and make with them
the sign of the cross on the forehead
of the worshipers’ saying ’’Remember
O man, that dust thou art, and unto
dust thou must return, repent, that
thou mayest inherit eternal life, ’
The ashes used were made by burning
the palms of Palm Sunday of the year
previous. The priest’s idea was that if
in the early church repentant sinners
would bestrew themselves with sack
cloth, even the faithful aught to strew
ashes on their foreheads to signify that
they ought to repent of their sins dur
ing Lent.
Aelfric, writing' in 990 , said. We
read in the books both in the Old and
New Testament that the men who re
pented of their sins bestrewed them
selves with ashes and clothed their
bodies with sackcloth. Now let us do
this little at the beginning of our Lent,
that we strew ashes upon our heads to
signify that we ought to repent of our
sins during the Lenten fast.
