SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

LENT
Eighth of a Series
When that Friday had come an
other had taken my place, and
of course you must know that it
was your place too. To-day He
looks for those that will let there
be that reproduction of Himself
in them. Now to the man that
will come after me.
Here's a toast that I want to
make to a fellow I’ll never know-
To the fellow who’s going to
take my place, when it’s time for
me to go. I’ve wondered what
kind of chap he’ll be, and wished
I could take his hand, just to
whisper, ’’ I wish you well, old
man’’, in away he’d understand.
I’d like to give him the warm
handclasp when never a friend
seemed near. I would love to fill
his yearning heart with words of
good cheer. I’ve learned my
knowledge by sheer hard work,
and wish I could pass it on, to
the fellow who’ll come to take
my place, some day when I am
gone. When he sees all the sad
mistakes I’ve made and note the
battles lost, will he ever guess of
the tears they caused or the
heartaches they’d cost?. Will he
gaze through the failures and
fruitless toil to the underlying
plan, and catch a glimpse of the
real intent and heart of the van
quished man?, I dare to hope he
may pursue some day, when he
toils as I have wrought, and gain
some strength for his weary task
from the battles I have fought.
But I’ve only the task itself to
leave with the cares for him to
face, and never a cheering word
may speak to the fellow Who’ll
take my place. Then here’s to
your faith, old chap, live as
bridegroom to his bride, I leave
an unfinished task to you, but
God knows how I’ve tried. I’ve
dreamed my dreams as all men
do, but never a one came true.
And we’ll meet someday in the
great Unknown - - out in the
realms of space; You’ll know my
clasp as I take your hand and
gaze in your tired face" Then a’j
our failures will be success in the
light of the new found dawn - - -
So here’s ”How” and victory
to You who’ll take my place
when I am gone.
The man who deals in sunshine
Is the man who gets the crowds;
He does a Jot more business
Than the man who peddles clouds.

Perhaps this poem explains
why Winter slips back around
Easter, and makes our Spring
bonnets look out of Season:
Perhaps King Winter ling -rs on
■ Beyond the time he shou d be gone,
[ Hoping he’ll be allowed to see
, The blossoms on the cherry tree.
With all his power of tyrant might
He’s never won the sweet debght
Which Wordsworth knew, of distant
hills
. Aglow with dancing daffodils
" e think him gone, but he returns
To catch a glimpse of woodland ferns.
Or hear the f athe ed chorus sing
Exultant welcome to the Spring
Tho Winter rules with fearful power-
Denied to him are leaf and flower
And when he lingers, it may be
The charm of Spring he waits to see.
