Miss Martha Stephens,
John H, Wheeler Wed.
In a ceremony at Toomsboro
Baptist Church Thursday after
noon. Miss Martha Hughes Steph
ens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Herbert Eugene Stephens of
Toomsboro, became the bride of
John Haywood Wheeler, son of
Rev. and Mrs. Huel Grady
Wheeler, Sr. of Clermont, Flori
da, formerly of Waynesboro, Ga.
The ceremony was performed by
the Rev. H. G. Wheeler, father
of the groom, and the musical
program was given by Mrs. Ward
Newton, soloist, and Mrs. H. C.
Joyner, pianist.
Mrs. Hubert S. Crosby, of
Gainesville, Florida, sister of the
bride, was matron of honor and
Miss Mary Louise Wheeler of
Clermont, sister of the groom,
was maid of honor. Mr. Wheeler
had as best man his brother, H.
Grady Wheeler, Jr. and Hubert
S. Crosby and Elmer E. Stephens
were ushers.
The bride, who was given in
marriage by her father, wore a
gown of white lace over satin
fashioned with illusion yoke and
a small bertha. Her veil of illu
sion was edged with lace and fell
from a coronet of seed pearls and
orange blossoms. She carried a
point lace handkerchief made by
her mother who also carried it at
her wedding, and her only orna
ment was an heirloom pearl neck
lace belonging to her mother.
She carried a bouquet of roses
centered with a white orchid.
The matron of honor wore a
moss green gown fashioned with
lace bodice and bouffant skirt.
The maid of honor wore a similar
gown of rose beige. They car
ried identical bouquets of bronze
chrysanthemums.
The bride’s mother chose a din
ner gown of rose lace and chiffon
with a white orchid and the
groom’s mother wore aqua crepe
with purple orchid corsage.
After the ceremony the bride’s
parents entertained with a small
reception at their home.
For her traveling costume the
bride chose a wine suit with
matching accessories and a cor
sage of white orchids. After a
short wedding trip the couple
will make their home in States
boro where Mr. Wheeler is con
nected with the Bulloch County
school system.

’Aoove are the 1950 winners of Union dag & Paper Corporation’s
four year scholarships to the School of Forestry at th Q University of
Georgia. Lett: Alan Herndon of Snellville, Georgia, and Richard Dar
den of LaGrange, Georgia. The young men will enter the University
this fall and each will receive $400.00 for each year of the college
course. This marks the fifth year Union Bag’s Savannah plant ha»
awarded scholarships to the Forestry School.
ROSE GARDEN CLUB
The Rose Garden Club met
Tuesday afternoon, August 15,
on the beautiful joint lawns of
Miss Lola Hatfield and Mrs. Fred
Everett.
Mrs. R W. Culpepper, Presi
dent, was in charge of the meet
ing She opened wit h a poem
‘Open Your Heart To Beauty”,
and she used as her theme
throughout the meeting ‘‘Find
ing God through Beauty” which
was very interesting and enchant
ing due to the lovely out-door
setting.
The hostesses used low bowls
of pink roses on glass top tables,
which brought out the beauty of
the natural shrubbery.
After a short business session
Mrs. W. L. Council presented a
program and gave a very inter
esting talk on Border Planting
showing pictures of the various
flowers suitable for borders for
each month in the year. In con
nection with this talk she had
two contests. Mrs. W. A. Tyson
Miss Hatfield and Mrs. E. C. By
ington were the winners.
Visitors were Mrs. w, A Tyson
of Vicksburg, Miss, Mrs. L. L
James of Atlanta, and Mrs. J. B.
Lindsey of Long Beach, Calif.,
also Mrs Jeff Corbett of Irwin
ton. Twelve members were pres
ent.
Delicious refreshments were
served by th« hostesses.

Georgia where she attended sum
mer school.
Miss Cornelia Byington is at
home from Teachers College at
Statesboro.
Mr. J. W. Sapp of Jeffersonville
spent several days last week as
the guest of his sister, Mrs. E E
Pendleton.
