Street of Irwinton
By Mary Tigner Hoy
We think we’d better quit put
ting these Irwinton people on the
sick list. They spring back too
quick Before we can rush to
press they are home again. When
people come out of the postoffice
reading the Bulletin there are
the “patients” breezing up and
down the Street, full of wim ai/
wigor, and someone says; “Hey,
you, it says here you are sick-a
bed in the hospital”-And where
does that leave ye ed ?
Russell and Bessie, Mrs. Skel
ton, Sybil and little Stevie came
down to see how Joe was getting
along, and visited around with
the relatives over the weekend.
Everyone is so glad to v e com?
these good friends back to Irwin
ton.
Lots of people are planning
family dinners for Thanksgiving
Makes those of us who have no
folks mighty lonesome.
Ben Chatfield, news director
of radio station WMAZ, has been
elected president of the National
Association of Radio News Direc
tors.
When Ben’s father, John Chat
field, finished law school and
was wondering where to hang
out his shingle it is said that he
closed his eyes and stuck a pin
in the map of Georgia and the
pin pointed to Irwinton, so Mr.
( hatfield was the first man from
Jonesboro to become a citizen of
Irwinton. His father and mother
followed him and lived here a
number of years. He was instru
ment in getting Dr. Pete Cousins
of Jonesboro to locate here, and
one or both of them recommend
ed my brother Lamar to Mr. Wil
liams who owned the Bulletin.
And that is One Thing that I
have to be thankful for: that I
live in Irwinton.

Mrs. Carl Vinson
Warmest sympathy goes to our
Representative Hon. Carl Vinson
whose wife has passed away af
ter a lingering illness. Mrs. Vin
suffered from arthrites and per
nicious anemia and had been an
invalid for years. No man could
have shown greater love and de
votion than Mr. Vinson during
all their married life. Since the
beginning of her affliction it was
well understood in Washington
that the congressman would de
cline all invitations to functions
taking place at night. He spent
hours turning the pages for her
while she read.
Mr. Vinson was first elected to
Congress in 1914. He was chair
man of the House Naval Affairs
( ommittee until all the services
were unified and he was placed
at the head of the House Armed
Services Committee.
His knowledge of military af
fairs, his geniality and industry
have won a large circle of devot
ed friends and sympathy goes
out to him from thousands who
know and love him.
