DIVING BELLE . . . Singing Went McGinty to the Bottom of the
Sea,” Mrs. Norma Hanson, 26, set new world’s record for deep
diving by women when she descended 220 feet into the Pacific at
Catalina. Mother of a 9-year-old girl, she is shown being fitted
with helmet by her husband, Alfred, before making the record
dive. On the bottom, she started singing “I’m Forever Blowing
Bubbles.”

Nationalization of Railroads
Would Be Wedge for Socialism
By Wright A. Patterson
THERE IS NOW being considered
by a senate committee a bill
introduced by Senator Kilgore,
Democrat, Virginia, that, if enacted
into law, would give us our first
actual entrance into English social
ism. It would nationalize the Amer
ican coal industry, create another
tremendously large government bu
reau, and, in all probability, be but
a first step in a general socializa
tion program.
Because of the policies and
practices of John Lewis and
his United Mine Workers in
creating coal shortages with an
ever increasing price of fuel,
it would undoubtedly temporar
ily be popular with a large seg
ment of the American people.
There is no direct, but much
indirect, evidence that Presi
dent Truman is back of the Kil
gore bill. It is not at all prob
able that it will pass at this
session of congress, but it might
at a future session, unless there
is a radical change in congres
sional sentiment following the
November elections and the
welfare state element in both
the senate and house is sup
planted by a more conserva
tive membership.
Such legislation would prove but
another of many million items of
the ever-continuing and growing
annual costs of excessive govern
ment, for which annual appropria
tions would be called in the execu
tive budget.
The owners of the coal mines
would probably hot oppose such a
move, as it would get them out of a
precarious situation.
It would cost American taxpayers
far more to support the government
bureaucracy that nationalization of
coal would create than they could
possibly save in fuel purchases.
That bureaucracy would but add to
the large number of job-paid-for
votes that is making ours a one
party government.
We could reasonably expect
coal to be followed by transpor
tation, communications, and
other utilities and industries.
It would promote and subsidize
our advance into socialism as
THE BULLETIN, IRWINTON, GA.
happened in England. Let us
hope for more conservatives in
the 82nd and future congresses.
A congress that would give us the
nationalization of coal, would give
us the Truman-Brannan farm plan
and the nationalization of the rail
roads, telegraph and telephone and
other utility industries. America
does not want that brand of social
ism.
The Republican party does not
build for success by its handpicked
leaders merely taking technical pot
shots at the opposition. There is an
abundance of principles and poli
cies in which millions of American
voters are interested which could
be laid down as principles and pol
icies for which the Republican party
stands.
They are not the things for
which the “me-tooers” stand,
but they are American. With a
continual backing of such prin
ciples and policies, rather than
the day-to-day pot shots on
every unimportant opportunity,
the party would have a founda
tion on which to build a real
and successful campaign that
would appeal to the nation’s
voters.
Mere pot shot criticisms directed
at the opposition will not change
the votes of any perceptable num
bers. We need a two party system,
but the second party must stand
for something definite and construc
tive, for principles and policies that
will appeal to the mass, not for
merely meaningless criticism, or a
“me too” approval.
Just because an industry is big
should not make it an object of
persecution on the part of the gov
ernment. U.S. Steel is big, and be
cause it was big, contributed in a
big way to the winning of World
War 11. Now its management is
forced to spend much of its time
defending the industry from at
tacks by the department of justice
and the inquisitions by congression
al committees. It does not and could
not prevent others from starting as
a competitor. It has several such.
They can win if they meet the qual
ity, the price and service.

Weather Prophecy
The Bible contains a weather
proverb that is as true today as it
was 20 centuries ago. “When it is
evening, ye say, It will be fair
weather: for the sky is red. And in
the morning, It will be foul
weather today: for the sky is red
and lowering.” Moisture and dust
in the air makes the sky red.
When heated by the morning sun,
an updraft follows, heavy clouds
form and rain probably will fall.
But as nights are cool, moisture
and dust settle to the ground.
Water Hunters Debunked
Many professional “dowsers”
who employ forked stick “divin
ing rods” sincerely believe in
their magic powers to find water
underground, but scientists say
they are deceived, according to
Richards Topical Encyclopedia.
The turning of the twig is due to
unconscious acts of muscle and
nerves while squeezing the stick.

Without Painful Backache
As we get older, stress and strain, over
exertion, excessive smoking or exposure to
cold sometimes slows down kidney func
tion. This may lead many folks to com
plain of nagging backache, loss of pep and
energy, headaches and dizziness. Getting
up nights or frequent passages may result
from minor bladder irritations due to cold,
dampness or dietary indiscretions.
If your discomforts are due to these
causes, don’t wait, try Doan's Pills, a mild
diuretic. Used successfully by millions for
over 50 years. While these symptoms may
often otherwise occur, it’s amazing how
many times Doan’s give happy relief—
