The 82nd Infantry Division was
activated during World War I. In
that conflict it had more time in'
the front lines than any other.
American Division. General “Skin- 1
ny” Wainwright, later a hero of
the Bataan Death March, and Ser-)
geant Alvin York were members
of the World War I Division.
After the armistice the Division'
was inactivated until March, 1942,
when it was re - activated under
the command of General Omar N.
Bradley. In August, 1942, the Divi
sion was re - designated the 82nd
Airborne Division. General Mat-)
thew B. Ridgway assumed com-’
mand a short time thereafter.
The 82nd Airborne Division was'
the first American airborne divi-j
sion to ship overseas in World War
11. From May tenth, 1943, till Jan
uary third, 1946, the Division spent
thirty -two months overseas, par
ticipated in seven major cam
paigns, made four combat jumps,
accumulated close to four hundred’
days in combat and its members
won more unit decorations and!
awards than any other American
division. The commander of the,
British Second Army, Lieutenant
General Sir Miles Dempsey, call-’
ed the 82nd, “The finest Division’
in the world today.” From July to
1 December, 1945, the Division serv
ed in Berlin to maintain order in
। the American Sector and guard
American Headquarters, thus earn-,
ing the distinctive title, “Amer
ica’s Guard of Honor.”
Since its return from Europe in
1946, the 82nd has taken part in
seven maneuvers as a climax to
each training period. “Exercise (
Long Horn,” the joint Army - Air;
Force maneuver the 82nd will par
ticipate in a short time hence will
be added to this list. This marks)
the first time the unit will play the,
role of Aggressor or Enemy forces.’
1 Aside from its own training, the
82nd Airborne Division has given
1 thousands of troops, now with oth
er units, training in many differ
ent fields. Continuous training, at
a steady tempo, keeps the Division
abreast of all tactical developments
and constantly prepared for com
mittment anywhere in the world.

Shaped like pork tenderloin,
