Sumter’s 22 distinct types of soil encourage a diversity
of products—mainly peanuts, fruits, cotton and livestock.
Americus is the home of Southwestern Junior College,
South Georgia Trade and Vocational School, and varied
industries—shirt factories, veneer plants, canneries, gins,
. lumber mills. One of Georgia’s most historical spots is
Andersonville Prison Park, where 13,741 Union soldiers
are buried. Os great interest is "Providence Spring,” be
lieved by thirst-tortured Union prisoners to have been
sent in direct answer to their prayers for water.
In this and other Georgia counties, the United States
Brewers Foundation works constantly to maintain whole
some conditions where beer and ale are sold. Close atten
tion is given areas near camps of the Armed Forces, and
both military officials and Georgia law enforcement offi
cers have commended the Foundation’s self-regulation
program. Retailer educational meetings offer sound sugges
tions for continued operation in the community’s interest.
