‘What about lingering radioactivity? =~ 7 ;
Lingering radioactivity differs from explosive activity in exactly the
‘same manner its name implies. : n
Explosive radioactivity is dissipated within seconds of the blast while
the lingering type may remain from a few minutes to weeks or months
or even years. -
Lingering radioactivity becomes an attending danger when A-bombs
are exploded on the ground, underground or in water, but is not present
with air bursts, unless rain falls soon afterward.
i It consists of countless billions of fragments, or pieces, of atoms split
up in the explosion. It is totally invisible, similar to ordinary, everyday
dust. When present in any real quantity these particles scatter about in *
patches and contaminate, or pollute, everything they fall on, including
Ppeople. : 2 :
Chief means of protection from lingering radioactivity: =~ — ‘
V. Stay in your shelter or home until advised to leave. You may be re-
Quired to remain indoors for three or four hours, or onger. : /
| 2. If caught in the open (if it's any explosion except an air burst))
Zet indoors right away. . ;
} 3. Any rain or mist after an atomic explosion is dangerous. If poss
igible, keep from getting wet. eI
4, After an attack, scrub exposed parts of the ’.v.j;:
