IN MARCH OF DIMES
Total contributions to the 1954
March of Dimes i n Wilkinson
County amounted to $1484 49. ac
cording to Wade Claxton. Cam
paign Director This sets a new
record in w ilkinson County.
A breakdown of the contribu
tions shows as follows: Irwinton
$196.53. Gordon 196.50. Mcln
tyre 85 54. Toomsboro 85 21, Dan
ville-Allentown 85 37.
Special recognition is due the
colored population of the co nty
under the direction of Miss Tom
mie Calhoun, who contributed a
total of 520 18. March of Dime
cards brought in 288 20 and 26.
64 was received from Robins Air
Force Base, which brought the
total to $1484 49
School children contributed
192 60, Mothers March 299.78,
and a special dance added 132.09

Toomsboro Topics
Mrs. Jerry James, the former
Miss SuEllen Holliman, has arriv
ed in Toomsboro for a visit with
her parents She came T. W. A.
from San Francisco to Atlanta
and the plane was forced to stay
in Fort Wayne. Ind. for nearly
ten hours, due to the blizzard in
that section. Ensign James was
due to fly to Guam this week bhe
will join him later.
If you missed the Rose Garden
Club’s trip to Atlanta Tuesday
you really missed lots of fun.
Joining the party in Gordon to
board the Nancy Hanks from the
’Boro were ^esdames Clarence
Thompson. Enni? Miller, Allen
Dixon, Clyde Dixon. Earl Tomp
kins. Gene Lord and Herbert
Holliman.
Mr. end Mrs. Clyde Herndon
spent the weekend in Augusta
and Mrs. Herndon was admitted
to the University Hospital on Sa
turday where she remained for a
few days. We hope she will be
fine soon.
Mrs. J. T. Bush is in Laurens
County hospital. Best wishes go
to Mrs. Bush.
Mrs. A. L. Branan left Sunday
for Estill. S. C. for a visit. Little
Suzanne Baker will undergo an
ear operation on Wednesday and
her grandmother will be with her
Dr. and Mrs. A D. Ware and
Mrs Mattie Mercer have had as
their guest Mrs. Kosa Moss and
Miss Lucile Mercer of Washing
ton, D C. They rated getting
Mrs Mercer out for a ride. Con
gratulations, girls! We bayen’t
succeeded yet.
Coming over from Marshall
ville recently to see Dr. and Mrs.

short trip to Florida last week,
accompanied by her sister from
North Carolina.

Wilmer Bragg Jr of the ma
rines at Parris Island S. c.. is .
visiting his mother, Mrs. Lucile
H. Bragg, and family and will go
from here April 7ih to the ma
rine station at Jacksonville, Ma.
So rar as we know everyone
who made the Trip to Rich’s on
the “Nancy” Tuesday, which was
sponsored by the Rose Garden
Club, had a delightful time being
a Very Important Person for a
day.

again won the National safety
louncil’s Award of Honor. (Will
give particulars next week
The Gordon preschool clinic
will be held at Dr. DuPree’s clin
ic on Friday, April 2nd and April
9th. Each child will have a phy
sical examination, also vision and
hearing tests and will be tested
for anemia and kidney disorders.
SPELLING CHAMPS OF WILKINSON
Wynette Farmer, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. J. C Farmer, won
the " ilkinson County spelling
bee sponsored by The Atlanta
Journal. She will represent the
county at the district bee in Ma
eon. Wynette, a seventh grade
student of Gordon High School
will receive a $25 savings bond
from the Atlanta Journal as the
county champion.
Others in the county bee were
Gloria Carr, eighth grade, Irwin
ton High School; Pat Landers,
seventh grade, Mclntyre Elemen
tary School; and Bonnie Wright,
eighth grade, Toomsboro High
School.

The Irwinton Hi-Y met with the
Tri-Hi-Y in the achool library. Bill
Cousions read the devotional. These
taking part on the program were Paul
Wood. Sonny Clayton. Benny McCook
and Wayne Lord. The club decided
to present a program at Macedonia
Church on Sunday morning, April 11
and at Mclntyre Church during Train
ing Union Hour. Plans for attending
the Christian Life Conference at Md-

Danville* Members of the Danville
Chapter of FHA, who have complet
ed a six-weeks course in Foods and
Nutritiou, as a climax to their course,
served an informal dinner. Honor
guests were Mrs. Thomas Pond, Eng
lish teacher, Mr. Pond and Sponeor
Teal, new school principal. Hostesses
were Annelle Brack, captain of the
group, and Elaine Jarrard. Jannello
Williams was waitress.
