President Dwight D. Eisenhower, honorary chairman of United
Defense Fund, presents citation to Lt. Gen. James H. Doolittle, leader
of World War II air raid on Tokyo, for his leadership as last year’s
national campaign chairman of LDF. General of the Army Omar N.
Bradley, at right, is present campaign chairman of the Fund.
NEW YORK — Three famous
comrades-in-arms of World War
11, one of whom is now President
of the United States, are serving
together in peace time as leaders
of the United Defense Fund—an
organization financing the activi
ties of USO and four other de
fense^related agencies.
The three generals,^ Dwight
Eisenhower, Omar Bradley and
“Jimmy” Doolittle, were among
the principal' speakers at UDF’s
recent leadership mobilization
meeting in Washington, D.C.,
attended by more than 500 vol
unteer leaders of UDF, Commu
nity Chests and United Funds
throughout the country.
At the opening session, held in
the Rose Garden at the White
House, President Eisenhower,
UDF’s honorary chairman, de
clared that “the big thing that
the United Defense Fund does is
to keep the soldier abroad under
standing that he is part of
America, no matter where he
comes from, what may be his city,
what may be his race, or his re
ligion—he still thinks, through
this kind of effort, primarily of
America, and of himself as an
American.”
Commenting on the services of
UDF agencies, General of the
Army Omar N. Bradley, UDF
national campaign chairman, said
that through these services “we,

here at home, keep in touch with
our young people in uniform, we
make them aware that we appre
ciate and have respect for the job
they’re doing, and we let them
know that, meanwhile, we are
doing everything we cat to
strengthen democracy here.”
Lt. Gen. James H. Doolittle,
chairman of the board of UDF,
asserted that “every American
serviceman in addition to being
fed and clothed and equipped,
needs a spiritual and emotional
gyroscope, a stabilizer to help him
keep his balance in a world of
confusion. The United Defense-
Fund program is designed to meet
that basic need.”
At the meeting, governmental,
industrial, business, labor and re
ligious leaders reported the need
for UDF services and urged sup
port of the Fund.
The United Defense Fund is
supported chiefly through Com-,
munity Chest and United Fund
campaigns held throughout- the
country. Last year, UDF received
approximately sll millionthrough
these drives. Because of unmet
needs, however. UDF this year
must raise an additional s4’/2
million.
Agencies included in UDF are
USO, United Community Defense
Services, American Social Hy
giene Association. United Sea
men’s Service, and National Rec
reation Association.
