Mr. I. L, Walton

Mr. 1. L Walton, a former res
ident of Toomsboro, passed away
suddenly late Wednesday, Aug.
25, in Irwinton, where he had
been carried to see Dr. Davis.
Mr. Walton, after eating a
hearty supper developed a pain
in his chest and was rushed to
the doctor, but died upon arrival.
Mr. Walton would have cele
brated his 76th birthday had he
lived until Aug. 28. He reared a
large family of children and two
of them are living in the county
now: Jack Walton of Mclntyre,
and Mrs H. C. Kelly of Tooms
bcro.
Mr. Walton’s wife died in 1923
and he was left to be both father
and mother to his family of most
ly small children. He was born
in Morgan County but most of
his life was spent in Mewton and
Wilkinson. He was a Mason and
a member of the Baptist Church;
a friend to all who knew him.
His funeral was held Saturday,
Aug. 28 at Moore’s funeral home
with the Rev. J. A. Harwell o£
Mclntyre and Rev. Rov Barnett
of Hardwick officiating. Harris

set ” Burial was in Shiloh Bap
tist Church Cemetery near Far
rar, Ga. Grandsons acted as pall
bearers: Horace and Bill Kelly,
Harvev Pearson, Donald anon,
Fl, M. Taylor and Gene Rankin.
The Masons served as honorary
palibeaiers.
Survivors were named in last
week’s Bulletin.

VERE DAVISON TO SPEAK
The farm pond owners of Wilkinson
County will be interested to know
that Mr. Verne Davison, Regional
Biologist of the Soil Conservation Ser
vice, will make a talk on pond man
agement on the farm of Mr C. A.
Duggan in Twiggs County at. 10 a m.
Friday, Sept. 17.
The Duggan farm is located one
mile east of Jeffersonville on the Ir
winton-Jeffersonville Highway. The
pond owners of Wilkinson County,
and others interested, are invited to
hear Mr. Davison. He is one of the
best informed men ou pond manage
ment in the South, and a trip to
Twiggs County to hear him will be
time well spent.
After the talk by Mr. Davison a
barbecue plate diuner will be served
at a nominal cost by the Twiggs Coun
ty 4-H Club.

Funeral services were held at
3 p.m Wednesday, Sept. 8, in the
Union Church. Irwinton, for Mr.
Royce C Shepherd. 58. assistant
cashier at Gordon Bank
He was laid to rest in Rethel
Church Cemetery with Masonic
rites at the graveside.
Surviving are his wife, the for
mer Miss Lizzie Pennington, of
Irwinton; one son, Royce Lester
Shepherd of Igloo S D; two
daughters, Mrs. T. A. Gallman,
Macon, and Mrs. Marvin Wilson,
Gordon; two brothers, John M.
Shepherd, Mclntyre, and J H.
.Shepherd, Irwmton; three sisters
Mrs. T. W. Bell and Mrs. L W.
Bell, both of Irwinton, and Mrs.
E. C. Lavender, Salina, Kan , his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Shep
herd, Irwinton, and six grand
children.
GOSDUN WOMAN’S CLUB
Mr Dwight Compton, the new
principal of the County High
School, will speak to the Womans
Club of Gordon at their meeting
Thursday, Sept. 16- He will dis
cuss the new school and his plans
for it.
Mrs. Alma Caldwell is presi
dent of the club. Hostesses for
this month’s meeting are: Mrs.
D. P, Lee, Mrs. E. M strange,
• Mrs. G H. Miller, Mrs. Woodrow

Miss Virginia Bragg, returning
from a visit to her sister, Mrs.
Ethel Lee at Jacksonville Beach,
spent the weekend with Mrs. Ma
mie Maddox and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Infinger
and ‘‘Miss Muffet” left Tuesday
for their home in Marshall, Tex.
Mrs. Annie Jones accompanied
them as far as Scooba, uiss.

ed from Ohio where she visited
her sister
Miss Adelyn Butler is at home
from Atlanta for a short vaca
tion.

Mr. and Mrs. C. C Beck. Ray
and Harold Jean Walker have re
turned from a trip to Florida.
J. M. CARPENTER
John M. Carpenter, 43, a min
ing engineer at Edgar Brothers
for the past nine years, died un
expectedly at his home at Mcln
tyre last Wednesday night.
Mr. Carpenter was a member
of the Methodist Church and a
past master of the Irwinton Ma
sonic Lodge.
The body was sent to his for
mer home, Girard, Kan., for fun
eral and burial.
Survivors include his wife, the
former Miss Margaret Milne; one
son, Jack Carpenter, and a
daughter, Lynne Ann Carpenter,
all of Mclntyre, his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. J, M- Carpenter Sr. of
Pittsburg, Kan , and two broth
ers.
Mr. Carpenter was a fine, pub
lic-spirited citizen, loved and re
spected by all who knew him. He
will be missed by the whole com
munity
' COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
When school bells rang for the
official opening of 1954-55 school
term Tuesday. 7 many Wilkinson
County students found a gleam
ing new building in which to con
tinue their education.
The new Wilkinson County
Consolidated High School, built
at a cost of about $300,000. is lo
cated on a nine-acre tract of land
three miles from Irwinton on the
Irwinton-Macon Highway
Consisting of 18 complete in
stitutional units, it contains 27,-
285 square feet of floor space. It
will serve an anticipated enroll
ment of 350 pupils this fall, and
offers complete courses in Eng
lish, sciences, home economics,
business administration, mathe
matics, vocationalagriculture, al
gebra, history and geometry
The large auditorium-gymna
sium, lunchroom and kitchen are
in a separate building. The en
tire school plant is sound proof
and has a n approved lighting
system. The interior is painted
in pleasant tones of green and
yellow with beige tile floors.
The large school lunch room
will be under the supervision of
Mrs. J F. Roberts of Mclntyre,
assisted by Mrs Grady Bentley,
Mrs. Rosa Hatcher and Mrs. Gra
dy Butler.

add complete band instruction
facilities next year, as well as
other educational features
