Russell iwowmatesfor GOVERNOR SM AI CLYDE On Tuesday two of the candid ates for Governor of Georgia spoke to the voters of Bryan county at Clyde. They were Hon W. W. Larsen and Hon. Charlie D. Redwine. They came to Clyde from Vid alia where both of them had spoke earlier in the day. Mr. Larsen was the first speak er and he was given a warm in troduction by Dr. W- K. Smith, who stated that he was a former pupil of Mr. Larsen and had been on the receiving end of a black gum switch more times than one- Wash Larsen as he is familiarly known to the people of Bryan county, he is a former citizen if our county, have lived here from t the age of six until after reach ing manhood. He has a strong following in Bryan county and will push the other man in Bryan if not in the state. w A f 223-225 West £ •t r^k Broad Street X ♦C jILmJI X X Savannah, Ga. | Special Summer dale I IJ ♦?♦ Extra Special Ladies Foot | Wear $4 ♦> $2 and S 3 Values jL X — | Mens Sport s.g 0 g X Oxiords & 53.00 Values i I Entire Stock Summer | I Goods Drastically y | Reduced. | She ^mbwkr 3Jaurnul SI.OO PER YEAR Mr. Redwine arrived at Clyde a bouc four o’clock and was given an opportunity to address the voters, he was introduced by Col. C. L. Purvis and immediately began a talk to the people. Char lie Redwine is a good man, and he is a forceful speaker and there is no question but that his visit to Bryan made him some friends. Politics is beginning to get warm now that we have had two of the candidates for Governor | visit our county and we predict that from now on they will be a . humming. Lee Pembroke, Ga. 7 ' Organ County of Bryan and City of (Pembroke WHY WE ARE SUPPORTING THE FOUR K’S THIS YEAR Inasmuch as we have seated that we are one hundred percent behind the candidacy of the four “R’s”. that is Roosevelt, Russell, Rivers and Roberts, It may be that we should state our reasons for favoring these gentlemen over the others. First of all, we do not see why any Georgia cracker should have to explain why he favored the candidacy of Franklin Delano Roosevelt to succeed himself as President of the United States. We believe him to be the greateet President that we have ever had, and believe that he has attempted to do more for the “underdog” than any other President ever has. It is true that everything that he has ordered done, has not met with our approval, but the fact remains that when he went into the White House he found the United States facing the gravest problems that ever confronted our coun try, and he had to do something and do it quick, he did not have time to consider whether this or that was constitut ional or not, it had to be done and find out about that later. Our state and our own county of Bryan is a thousand times better off today than they were when Roosevelt went into office. That is reason enough. Next comes our reason for supporting Senator Russell. There are plenty of reasons, he has the ability and has been quietly, but everlastingly on the job. and has produced re sults for his state that speaks louder than all the hullabaloo in the world could possibly do. But if we had no other rea son except the tact that he is a friend of the national ad mieistration and Will work with and co operate with that great patriot, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, while on the other hand, his opponent, Governor Talmadge would do just the contrary and would, do in thg.future like he has in the past, line up with the Republicans, the Liberty Leaguers etc., and fight the Roosevelt administration at every turn, that alone would be enough to make us tear our shirt for‘‘Little Dick.” Then we are supporting E. D. Rivers for Governor be cause we realize that he is the only man that stands a show to beat Governor Talmadges candidate. “Me To” Charlie Redwine. We believe that should Redwine be elected as Governor, that it would be another Louisana situation, where Senator Long controlled Governor 0. K. Allen of Louisana and it proved so disastrous to that state. Ed Rivers is a good man, and will make Georgia one of the best Governors that we have ever had, and when he gets in the Governors office our state will be ruled by law and not by bayonets and the national guard under Lindley Camp. He favors Old Age Pensions and if elected wiil do all in his power to see that our old people, both white and colored get their just rights under this cause. He has long been an advocate of free school books and now that we are about to get them for part of our school children he is due much credit for the work that he has done for this cause. We would like to support Wash Larsen for Governor, he lived in this county for many years, taught school here and looks upon Bryan county as being his home county, but we LADIES DRESSES I Group 1 98c* Group 2 $1.95 £ Mens Sum mer Suits 3 Piece Suits J V PEMBROKE, GA., Friday August 7th., 1936 Russels Manager At Savannah Headquarters BEACH EDWARDS Hon. Beach Edwards’ selection as manager of Russells Savannah headquarters means that “Little Dicks’’ chances of carrying the First District is much better. He is one of the strongest men in the Vint District. He ill Rule By Law—Not By Bayonets! vw „ ” ' '--'SA- s sA K ■ J J ■ B / ww -J? A . '' y • ifeiWi Ji --L ■ a- - ■; a 5 Georgias Next Governor, E, D. Rivers honestly believe that he does not stand a show to be elect ed and we had rather help beat Redwine than cast a com plimentary vote for Wash Larsen. In supporting Columbus Roberts for Commissioner of Agriculture, we do so believing that he is as far ahead of Tom Linder in ability and fair dealing to the farmers of Georgia as daylight is ahead of dafk. Columbus Roberts will give the little one horse farmer a new deal, and the day he goes in office will be a big day for the little fellow that toil on the farms for a living. Now in conclusion we ask our readers to consider the different candidates and vote their conscience, pick the men that will fill the office with credit to themselves and their country and we have no doubt but that they wdl do like the editor of this paper will do, and that is vote for Roosevelt for President, Russell for the United States Sen ate, Rivers for Governor and Roberts for Commissioner. AUGUST EEEN SUPERIOR COURT WAS A SHORT ONE The August Term of Bryan County Superior Court met at Clyde Monday and adjourned on Wednesday. A number of uncontested di vorce cases were granted after which the case of Mrs. S. E- Blitch and Brown Blitch vs H. M. Gardner, A. E. DeLoach and Carson Naval Stores Company was took up. The case was one of ejectment and was the first of its kind to ever be tried in the county. Messrs Gardner aad DeLoach have been in possesion of about 275 acres of land in the 1380th District for about nine years and so far as they knew had a perfect title to same, but in tbe suit that was broght it was contended that the property was secured from Sam Blitch deceased and that he was not of sound mind and the jury gave the plaintiffs a verdict. The case will be carried to the higher courts. On Tuesday the case of Brooks McElveen, charged with murder was taken up. The case grew out of a fatal accident some time ago at Reka, when the truck driven by McElveen ran into a notber auto on the highway and inflicted injuries which caused the death of Clanton Richardson a little 10 year old Evans County boy. He was found guilty of in voluntary manslaughter and the jury reeommended that he be punished as for a misdemeaor and have the mercy of the court. He was given a sentence of 12 months and fined $l5O. and the chain gang sentence was probated. On Wednesday the murder case agrinst J. Harvey Rogers charged with the death of Miss Alberta Parker, she having been killed when a taxi cab dtiven by Rogers ran into an electric light pole at Groveland, and she sustained in juries from which she died later at a Savannah Hospital. He was found guilty and given a sentence of 12 mouths on the gang ar.d fined 5200., and the chain gang sentence was probated.
