In planning thb home garden
for this year, the fact might be
kept in mind that the ga den can
be ma le more than a convenience
to the homemaker; It can be
made a source of fresh vegetables
and also foods for canning, and
drying.
A number of things will go to
determine the size of the garden
and the kinds of foods to be plan
ted. Where the linger growing
seasons permit a succession of
crops, smaller gardens may be
planted than where larger canned
and stored supplies are necessary

MILLIONS suffer less from Headache, Acid Indigestion, Distress
of Colds "Morning After" and Muscular Fatigue because they
have heard—and believed—Alka-Seltzer radio announcements.
To these millions, the relief obtained by the use of Alka-Seltzer
is worth far more than the Pennine enioyment they get from the
broadcasts.
The most important parts or our raoto program, both to you and
to us, are the commercial announcements. Once you have tried
Alka-Seltzer we believe you will agree with us.
But try Alka-Seltzer because it is an unusually effective medi
cine not because vou enjoy th. radio programs.
WHY ALKA-SELTZER IS SO EFFECTIVE
The pain-relieving analgesic in Alka-Seltzer is in complete solu
tion, ready to ease the distress as soon as you swallow it. The
painrelieving action is made more effective by alkaline buffers.
The alkalizing elements in Alka-Seltzer reduce excess stomach
i acidity.
Get Alka-Seltzer the next time you
pass a drug store.

Mirror an Optical Instrument
An article in the encyclopedia de
fines a mirror as ‘‘an optical in
strument which produces images of
objects by reflection; in ancient
times merely a polished sheet of
metal called a speculum, in mod
ern times a sheet of polished glass
tilvered at the back.”
Basque Colony
The Basques, who were amont
the first settlers of the Argentine,
have flourished until they are as
numerous as in their traditional
homeland in the Pyrenees. They
have preserved their racial purity,
customs and traditions.
Reverence for Women
Shri Sankaracharya, founder of
modern Hinduism, enjoins every
man "not to undertake a task ot
great importance or a vsluable de
cision or decide upon his conduct in
business or other spheres of life
without obtaining the consent of
his spouse.” No other religion
teaches such reverence for its
women.
Provided for Cyclers
A law passed by the Ohio legis
lature in April of 1898 indicated tiiat
either everyone rode bicycles or
else the bicyclists supported a po
tent lobby. The law provided th^
persons sprinkling streets in the
larger cities should leave a dry
strip, four feet wide. This was to
be a path for the bike riders, who
might skid on the slippery streets.
Labrador Once Unknown
Except for Leif Ericson's wander
ings from Greenland dowm its coast,
Labrador was an unknown hinter
land until well on into the Nine
teenth century. Traders, Jesuit mis
sionaries and the Oblate Fathers,
coureurs de bois, Hudson's Bay fac
tors. traveled in Labrador at vari
ous times; but it remained for ex
plorers like John McLean (1840),
Father Lacrosse (1875), R. F.
Holmes (1887), Cary and Cole
(1891), Bryant and Keniston, Dr.
Low (1896), to discover the vast,
rich area surrounding Grand Falls,
250 miles above Hamilton tide
water.

What is popularly known as Malta
onsists actually of a chain of is
lands of which the two largest art
Malta itself, covering 91 miles, and
Gozo covering 20 square miles. For
archeologists and historians, these
islands are a paradise. There are
dark temples to be explored, and
in one teinpie visitors can make
use of a hole in the wall, which in
bygone days served as a mega
phone, through which the priest
thundered forth the spurious mes
sage of the god. Rock temples con
tain massive altars which by their
shape suggest that they were used
for human sacrifice.
