Road Board Eead
Blames Selfish
Clique For Row
While his attorneys studied
their next move in the legal bat
tle to compel Governor E- D.
Rivers to obey Georgia court or
ders for his restoration to the
post of Chairman of the State
Highway Board, W. L- Miller
took his ease to the people in a
radio address in which he accused
four advisors of the Governor, by
name, and a “selfish clique of in
siders” for the troubled condtion
of the State Highway Depart-

preme Court of Georgia will hand
down a decission in the case
Georgia’s highest court begins its
spring term in April and a decis
ion was expeected about April 8.
In his address, Mr. Miller de
clared that his reduction in the
price of sand asphalt, a material
for road building upon which Dr.
Hiram W. Evans, a political in
timate of the Governor, allegedly
holds a monopoly, was the im
mediate cause of his forecible e
jection from office. Shortly be
fore his ejection from his office,
Mr. Miller forced a reauction of
$1 31 a ton on this material bring
ing the price to $4 a ton, in line
with other states.
Mr. Miller cited two instances
where identical materials were
sold to the State and to the WPA
and where the price to Georgia,
under an executive order origina
ting from the Governor, was much
higher than the ptice to the Fed
eral agency. At Mr. Miller’s iu
istence, the Highway Board de
manded a readjustment of the
purchases so that one order was
ieduced from $3,696 to $2,842
and the other from $3,102,70 to
$1,633,36
Declareing that the Governor’s
suggestion that the Highway head
planned a gubernatorial campaign
Mr Miller said that if he was re
stoied to the office to which the
courts had found he was entitled,
he had no intention of seeking auy
other office, but that otherwise
the issue of civil rights and gov
ernment by law would be presen
ted to the people of Georgia this
fall.
Some of the charges in the Mil
ler address were so serious that
speculation has arisen that an in
veligation may be launched by
State and Federal grand juries
into them.

The policies and purposes of the Brewers and Beer
Distributors Committee of Georgia are not only in ac
cord with public sentiment—they have the support of
state and local authorities, and have been given “the
green light” by the Attorney General of Georgia.
The Georgia beer industry, employing 10,000 persons,
spending $6,000,000 annually in payrolls and $4,000,000
in taxes, is determined to eliminate undesirable condi
tions wherever found.
The great majority of the state’s retail outlets are
respectable . . . their proprietors and patrons are law
abiding. We’re for them—that’s the kind of business we
approve.
The business we don’t want is that of the few places
where abuses are permitted to endanger the good name
of beer as a moderate beverage.
ACTION!
3 More Licenses
Revoked
On Feb. 21, licenses of three
retail outlets at Griffin were re
voked on evidence submitted by
this Committee.
On March 15, three more li
censes in Richmond County
were similarly revoked.
The Committee really means
"Clean Up or Close Up.
