Tomorrow’s Sun
By J. C. Wilson
No tn ore revolting manifesta
tion of intolerance has occured in
Georgia than the series of hog
gins in and around Eajt Point,
which culminated in the beating
to death of Ike Gaston, a barber
with a wife and three small chil
dren.
If it is true that Gaston had a
babbit of getting drunk and dis
orderly, there was plenty of law
to handle him.
Maybe the men who flogged
him did not intend to kill him,
but they flogged him with with a
knot that was heavy enough to
flog a mule to death, and when
he collapsed under the lashes they
laid on him, thev left him to die
in agony in a isolated creek bot
tom, too fa r away for his cries to
be heard by anyone except them
selves as they fled the scene

founded upon the bedrock of for
bearance and fraternity.
What sort of madness possesses
men to make them go around
their community under cover of
darkness, seizing first one victim
and then another, hauling them
out to some lonely and isolated
place, whipping them unmerciful
ly and leaving them to get back
home as best they can?
This not only is a serious offen

so a serious offense against the

Nothing can explain it except
the madness of intolerance. It is
intolerance that causes a group of
men to take in their own hands,
as self-appointed vigilantes, the
regulation of the personal and
private lives of other men. Where
ever a law is violated, the penal
ties of the law can always be in
voked aginst the violator. But it
does not appear that those flogg
ing victims were accused of any
offenses against the law, except
possibly in the case of Ike Gaston,
and his worst offenses was occas
ionaly getting drunk.
Suppose it be true that Ike did
occasionallyjdrink too much have
the self appointed guardians of
Ike's conduct improved the con
dition of his wile and three small
children? They have killed the
husband who provided her a living
and left her stranded and helped
upon the charity of the communi
ty; They have brought terror and
bewildeiment to the hearts of
three little children. So long as
these children live their memory
will haunt them with the horrible
recollection of a lather flogged to
unconsciousness and left to die in
a lonely creek bottom where
none could hear his screams ex
cept the fiends who murde.ed
him.
Most crude and destruct ve
trait of human depravity is that
of Intolerance Down through ti e
centuries it has been the curst o.
mankind in every civ.lized coun
try. It has created more human
misery and suffering thaa wars,
disease and poverty combiued.
Indeed Intolerance might be said
to be the mother of wars, of dis
ease, of poverty ignorance.
