Ga. Retail Market
Cited To Tourists
Georgia and her many attrac
tions continue to draw the at
tention of outsiders. Latest ex
ample is a story in the current
issue of The Buyer, a trade news
magazine published in Atlanta,
which reaches a reading and buy
ing market over nine Southeast
ern states.
The story, prepared by the
State Agricultural and Indus
trial Development Board, de
picts Georgia’s possibilities as
a retail market for the thous
ands of tourists who annually
pass through the state. It gives
facts about the routes travelers
take through Georgia, the earn
in honoring the late author of
the Uncle Remus stories, par
ticularly Eatonton, Harris’
birthplace, and Forsyth and Sa
vannah, where he also worked
on newspapers.
Festivities begin the first of
November, with an exhibit of a
Disney studio, complete with
animators from Hollywood, open
to the public without charge. In
addition the Uncle Remus pup
pet-show of the Atlanta Junior
League, co-sponsor of the pre
miere, will be presented at the
studio, to be set up in downtown
Atlanta. The Uncle Remus Me
morial Association also is spon
soring the premiere.
On Armistice Day, in colla
boration with special artillery
units of the Third U. S. Army,
the American Legion and the
Georgia State Guard, a gigantic
Uncle Remus parade will be held
in Atlanta.
Stars of screen and radio will
ride in the parade which will
feature elaborate Uncle Remus
floats. They include the child
stars of “Songs of the South,”
Luana Patten, Bobby Driscoll,
and Ruth Warwick, who has the
romantic lead in the movie.

Georgia Authors
Continue At Top
Georgia, thanks to her t a 1-
ented writers—both established
and budding young authors —
continues to stay high up on
the world’s literary ladder.
For example, Margaret M it
chell’s “Gone With the Wind” is
still being widely read in foreign
lands. In fact, the book has ap
peared in twenty-five countries
in eighteen languages, with still
other translations planned, it is
said. Which means that every
body who reads the book gets
an impression of Georgia dur
ing the War Between the States.
And now those throughout the
country and abroad who read
Gov. Ellis Arnall’s forthcoming
book, “The Shore Dimly Seen,”
will get an impression of Geor
gia and the South as it is today.
Written in a different vein, of
course, (it’s non-fiction), the
book, according to all reports, is
a readable, fast-moving account
of the progressive young Gov
ernor’s experiences, interwoven
with his ideas on the problems
of the South and its develop
ment.
From all indications an eager
reading public is anxiously
awaiting release of the maiden
work of Georgia’s newest au
thor. J. B. Lippincott Company,
the publisher, has announced

Farmers Urged To
Use Timber Bulletin
Farmers and landowners in
Georgia were urged this week
to make use of the State De
partment of Forestry’s timber
market bulletin, issued monthly
to the wood-using industries.
“This is a quick route to the
sale of timber,’ commented R. L.
Mosely, management specialist
for the Forestry Department,
“And there are no charges what
soever for listing the timber for
sale.’’
The Soil Conservation Service
and the Extension Service are
co-operating with the Depart
ment of Forestry in the produc
tion of the timber market bul
letin. For further information,
consult the county agent or the
soil conservationist or write di
rectly to R. L. Mosely, Dept, of
Forestry, court house, Macon.
The State Department of For
estry fixes Georgia’s income
from timber and timber prod
ucts at $275,000,000 a year.
Besides being essential to the
production of forest products,
Georgia’s timberlands protect
watersheds, shelter wildlife,
control erosion, regulate stream
flow, provide windbreaks and
are an integral part of the
beauty of the state.
