The Home Orchard
The families of Bryan County
are urged to take stock of their
orchards now and determine the
things necesary for a better or
chard. Orchard owners may
profit by keeping the following
factors in mind when working
in the orchard:
1. Plant only approved and
adapted fruits and varieties.
2. Select a suitable site for
each plant.
3. Bryan county soil is adapted
to pecans, pears, figs, grapes,
blueberries and plums. Peaches
and other fruits may be grown
in limited quantities by follow
ing good culture methods and
spraying each season.
4. Recommended varieties for
Bryan county orchards are:
pears, Baldwin; pecans, Farley
and Stuart; grapes, Ugo, Dulcet
and Scuppernong; figs, Celeste;
peaches, Uneeda, Mayflower, In
dian and others that have been
grown with success in the past;
plums, Burbank and Abundance
and others estabslihed success
fully in various orchards thru
ont the county; Blueberries.
Any of the rabbit eye varieties
which are natives of this sec
tion.
5. Order nursery stock early
as the better varieties are limit
ed and in many cases already
sold out.
The reason many ent rprises
fail to go forward is that it is
much easier to plan to do than
to do.

State Farm Bureau
Approximately 5,000 new
memberships have been added to
the rolls of the Georgia Farm
Bureau Federation thus far in
October, according to an an
nouncement released from state
headquarters in Macon the first
of this week. This represents a
substantial increase over the
same date last year and gives
promise of reaching the 50,000
total requested by President H.
L. Wingate in his annual report
at the 1945 convention.
Several counties in the state
have reported memberships
equal to more than twice the
total recorded in 1945, the an
nouncement reevaled, with cam
paigns still underway in these
leading farm bureau sections.
“I am delighted with the prog
ress we are making,” stated Mr.
Wingate, in commenting on the
increase in farm bureau mem
bership over the state, “and the
farmers of Georgia may be as
sured that the accomplishments
of this organization will show
a decided boost over the record
of the past when our member
ship was small compared with
the number of farms in the
state.” He added that achieve
ments through organized effort
on the part of Georgia farmers
will contribute to “every seg
ment of our economy. When ag
riculture prospers,” the G. F.
B. F. leader asserted, “other
groups are likewise benefittea.”
An endorsement of the farm
bureau which has created wide
spread interest throughout the
state was that given by t h e
State Democratic Convention
held in Macon on October 9
when Mr. Talmadge was formal
ly nominated for a fourth term
as governor. The platform,
adopted by unanimous vote of
the delegates, stated: “Urges
