Drive Safely—Or Live Briefly
It would be absurd for Americans today to give up using their
automobiles because of the danger of a possible accident. It is
equally absurd for any driver, including you, to take a powerful
modern car out on the road without first learning, and then prac
ticing, the few simple rules of skillful driving that prevent acci
dents and save lives that would otherwise be lost.
Like it or not, whenever you start the motor of your family
car you are setting in motion a machine capable of killing or crip
pling you, or some other person, within the space of a few brief
seconds. Only by skillful driving can you avoid becoming a killer
or a corpse as the case may be. Plain words, yes, but they are
supported by plain facts. Each vear hundreds of our fellow Geor
gians are taken from the scene of an auto crash to the grave; hun
dreds and thousands of others go to hospital beds or to wheel
chairs and crutches for weeks or months or for the remainder of
their natural lives This year or next your own turn may come.
It depends largely upon you, the skills you use or neglect when
you drive, the care or lack of car which you give to your car.
With winter on the way driving conditions are automatically
going to get worse, the accident rate will tend to show a seasonal
rise, and the need for maximum care in driving on your part be
comes all the more urgent. Right now is the time to make sure
this winter won’t find you the star actor in a tragedy.

Autumn Is Falling
By Aulton O. Smith
Autumn is falling, have you
heard
The Robins in the black gum;
No more songs of the Summer
bird
Until ’47 when a new Spring will
come.
Have you noticed of late
Down the hills ripe acorns roll,
Leaves that tumbled, piled at
the gate
By the chilling winds from the
North pole?
Trees are changing their coat of
green
For bare branches to catch the |
snow,
Their purpose in Summer we
have seen
And the branches in Winter
we’ll soon know.
Nuts are sweeter than last June
Pumpkins so orange, plump and
round
Hallowe’en is coming, the witch
and broom
Autumn is falling, I hear my ole
coon hound.
Ringing in fresh Autumn mom
breeze
My neighbor’s echo, so early did
rise
To see jack frost, hear the rab
bit sneeze
For Autumn has fallen, on a
Southern sunrise.
Arnall To Vote In
Ala. —For A Queen
Believe it or not, Gov. Ellis
Arnall and several of his aides
are going to vote in an approach
ing election in Alabama. Yes,
that’s right, and they even plan
to be repeaters, casting several
hundred ballots.
But it has nothing to do with
state politics. You see, the elec
tion is for queen of the home
coming festival at Madison High
School in Gurley, Ala., on No
vember 1. The governor and his
aides will vote for 8-year-old
Emelda Payne, in the third
grade, who write him:
“You are the governor of
Georgia and a good one, too, but:
you do not get a chance to votZ'
in Alabama except on a big oc
casion. I am going to let you in j
on such an event and ask you >
to help me put it over in a big
way. Mr. Folsom seems to count
on you a lot so may I also count
on you?
"I have blue eyes and curly
blonde hair. I know most men
prefer blondes. Are governors
the same way? I believe ‘Big
Jim’ is. The votes are one-cent
each and the money goes to help
on a lunch room at our school.
How many votes do I get from
you and your office force? Use
your influence for me and set a
record of a Georgia governor
voting in an important Alabama
election.”
