Harvesting and Curing
Tobacco
High quality leaf can be as
sured by proper handling in
harvesting and curing. There
are several factors to consider,
portion of plant leaves are
from, weather conditions at
time of harvest, in knowing
just what to do for best re
sults-
The lower leaves, or lugs,
color much faster’ than those
further up the stalk. Dry
weather tobacco colors faster
than wet weather tobacco
while drought tobacco color’s
very slowly. Water introduc
ed into the barn filled with dry
weather leaves will create high
humidity and hasten the color
ing process, ^et sacks and
water poured on the floor of
the barn will increase the hu
midity. Care should be taken
as too much water will make
leaf drying difficult.
First stage of curing is color
ing. This is accomplished by
closing the barn air-tight and
maintaining a temperature of
approximately "95 degrees F. un
til coloring is well underway.
As the coloring proceeds, the
temperature is increased gradu
ally up to 110 to 115 degrees F.
The length of time necessary
for coloring depends on the
above factors.
Second stage—drying leaf, is
done immediately after the col
oring by raising the tempera
ture from 115 degrees in steps
of 5 degrees every two hours
until temperature of 140 to 145
degrees is reached. Ventilators
should be partially opened at
110 degrees. The amount of
ventilation to be given depends
on the condition of the to
bacco- This can be determined
by the above factors and size
of the leaves and amount of
tobacco in barn. This norma.-
ly required 10-18 hours to dry
the leaf.
The third stage—killing the
stem, is started after the leaf
has dried as it will “rattle"
good and with little or no un
dried leaf near the stick. This
is done by closing all ventilators
land raising the temperature
from 145 degrees in steps of 5
degrees every two hours until
170 degree is reached. In no
case should the temperature go
aver 170 degrees or scorching
will occur. In fact, it is much
better to take more time and
kill the stem at 160-105 degress
As soon as the stems (mid
ribs) become brittle, the cure is
complete.
