Committee Named
To Plan Baptist
Bible School
A committee has been named
by Sunday School Superintendent
Ben Brewton to make plans for
the Pembroke Baptist Church Bible
School which will begin on June 10
and run throughout the week.
Lining up the faculty and ma
terial for the Bible School are
Mrs. J. 0. Strickland, Jr., Mrs.
J. W. Brewton, Mrs. W. W. Curl,
Jr., Mrs. N. L. Ham, D. E. Med
ders and C. N. McGee.
The four circles of the Wom
an’s Missionary Union will serve
those attending the school and, ac
cording to custom, a picnic will be
held on Friday, the final day.
Friday night the public will be
invited to commencement exercises
and to view the work done by the
students during the week.
A state worker will be in charge
of the Bible School, according to
the Rev. John R. Joyner, who also
said the new recreational director,
Richard Cates, is also expected to
be here. Mr. Cates, who will re
port for work on June 3, was re
cently employed by the church to
assist with youth work during the
three summer months.
CHRISTIAN CHURCH
BIBLE SCHOOL TO
START MONDAY
The Daily Vacation Bible School
of the Pembroke Christian Church
will open Monday morning. Hours
for the school are from 9:80 to
11:30.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald L. Dye
and a competent corps of workers
will be in charge of the school
which will bring together the child
ren and intermediate age group
for a week of Bible study and fun.
Mr. and Mrs. Dye are in Spring
field this week conducting a Vac
ation Bible School.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ben
Brewton are the latter’s sisters,
Mrs. Troy Davis of Miami, Fla.,
and Mrs. Charles McManus of
Orlando, Fla. They are in Pem
broke for the graduation of their
niece, Mrs. Doris Brewton, from
the Bryan County High School.

PARENTS MAKE Ist
TRIP SOUTH
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Williamson
are having the pleasure of a visit
from Mrs. Williamson’s parents
and two brothers.
This is the first trip to the
south for Mr. and Mrs. Philip For
est of Sanford, Maine, and their
sons, Denis, 22, and Claude, 12.
They have journeyed across the
country to California but never to
this section before.
The family came down in a car
during Mr. Forest’s vacation and
will probably be here for about a
week.
Needless to say, Mr. and Mrs.
Williamson’s friends are delighted
that they are here and they will
no doubt be calling on them.
DISTRICT OFFICER
TO TAKE PART IN
TRAINING DAY
The vice president of the Savan
nah District of the Women,s So
ciety of Christian Service will
lead four workships being held
in connection with officers’ train
ing days.
Mrs. H. D. Griner of Pembroke
will help conduct workships at
Buck Creek in Sylvania, June 4;
Metter, June 6; Guyton, June 11;
and at Whitfield Methodist Church
in Savannah on June 13.
Mrs. Griner is president of the
Pembroke Woman's Society of
Christian Service and has held
other offices in the Savannah Dis
trict.
BAPTIST FLOWER
COMMITTEE IS
NAMED
The flower committee for the
month of June for the Pembroke
Baptist Church has been named
by Mrs. John R. Joyner; flower
chairman for the church.
On the committee are Mrs. P. E.
Brannen, Mrs. W. J. Ham, Mrs. H.
L. Speir, Jr., Mrs. Melvin Speir
and Mrs. M. D. Griffin. Each
one of the committee will have
a certain Sunday on which to put
flower in the church sanctuary.
DELEGATE, PASTOR
ARE AT SOUTH GA.
ME. CONFERENCE
The pastor of Methodist
churches on the Pembroke charge
and the delegate left Monday to
spend five days in Columbus at
tending the South Georgia Meth
odist Conference.
The Rev. J. L. Hendrix is com
pleting his fourth year as pastor
of the Pembroke, Daisy and Ella
belle churches. Usually four years
is the length of time a Methodist
preacher stays at one place. As
to whether Mr. Hendrix is moved
or sent back to Pembroke will be
discovered Friday around noon
when the appointments are read
by Bishop Arthur J. Moore.
Some 1,500 delegates, including
J. Dixie Harn, and visitors heard
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, author
and minister, who arrived in Co
lumbus Tuesday afternoon. He
addressed the conference twice
Tuesday at Wynnton Methodist
Church ,the host church.
YOUNG PASTOR
RECEIVES DEGREE
The Rev. James T. Hatcher,
Jr. received his bachelor of arts
degree from Mercer University in
Macon Monday.
The young pastor attended the
Bryan County High School while
his parents lived here for a short
time several years ago. He has
been to the Baptist Church here,
speaking to the congregation.
Mr. Hatcher is a member of
Chi Alpha Omega, the Mercer
Ministerial Association, and Rel
igious Education Association. He is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. James
T. Hatcher of Bloomingdale and
the neptew of Mr. and Mrs. G. B.
Williams of Pembroke.

TO ATTEND
SUMMER SCHOOL
A Bryan County High School
faculty member will attend sum
mer school, as will a Teachers
College student.
Miss Jan Deal will return to
the college for the summer ses
sion after completing the Spring
term. Also going will be Mrs.
J. O. Strickland, Jr., teacher in the*
high school department of the
Pembroke school.
Other teachers in the county
schools and students, as well, will
probably decide to make the daily
trips to the summer sessions at
Georgia Teachers College.
PEMBROKE CHRISTIANS
ATTEND ANNUAL
CONVENTION WED.
Several members of the Pem
broke Christian Church attended
the Savannah District convention
of Christian Churches which was
held Wednesday at the Rocky
Ford Christian Church in Rocky
Ford. The president, Clinton
Strickland, of Glennville, presided.
A number of state workers were
on hand for the annual meeting.
GENE SANDERS TO
BE COUNCILOR FOR
JUNIOR M.Y.F.
Gene Sanders has accepted the
place of councilor of the Junior
group of the Methodist Youth
Fellowship in Pembroke. His term
of office will be for six months.
The College student is one of
the church’s leading young people
and has done Youth Fellowship
work for several years.
GARDEN CLUB MEMBER
JUDGES AT CLAXTON
FLOWER SHOW
A prominent member of the
Pembroke Garden Club was invit
ed to judge at the flower show
held this week in Claxton. The
theme of the show was “Progress
in Claxton and Evans County.”
One of the judges was Mrs. U.
J. Bacon, member of the local gar
den club. Mrs. Bacon won awards
on her arrangements in the flower
show held here recently.
