Forestry News
Due 'to a lack of general rain
since October, forest fire danger
is at a peak, according to James
C. Turner, Fire Chief of the Geor- i
gia Forestry Commission.
Since December 1, Georgia has
had 862 fires which have burned
6,800 acres. Any one of these I
fires could have resulted in a j
“blow-up” fire, one which would :
quickly envelop thousands of acres I
before it could be brought under I
control, Turned added.
Hardest hit areas in the state
so far have been the Statesboro, I
Mcßae and Waycross areas. Trash |
burning has accounted for the ma- I
। jority of these fires.
The Fire Chief commended the
public for their quick reporting ;
I of the fires to local forestry units.
I “Without this help we would have
' lost many more acres,” stated
Turner. However, until there is
i a general rain, Turner is asking i
I the public to cooperate with their ;
i local forest rangers and to refrain
from doing any outside burning.
Turner reminded citizens that I
most counties now have the “Coun-
Ity Option Fire Law” in effect ■
\ which states that anyone wishing
' to do any burning must notify the
‘ county forestry unit of their intent
;to burn. Failure to do so con- I
j stitutes a misdemeanor.
“All of us know what cur .
! forests mean to the economy of the |
state,” Turner explained, “so 1
j hope all Georgians will cooperate'
i with the Geoi gia Forestry Com- ‘
I mission and prevent these fires ।
i which rob our state of untold
' wealth.”

Christmas Trees
“They’re beautiful and fire
' proof—decorate them and admire,
i but don't hang electric lights on
; them.”
That’s the word this year on :
aluminum Christmas trees, accord
ing to Henry C. Steed, Jr., direc-|
tor of accident prevention, Georgia i
Department of Public Health.
A new hazard has come to the
forefront in recent years because
of placing lights on these trees,
Mr. Steed said. A voltage leak
from faulty electric lights on wir
ing on an aluminum or other me
tallic tree can result in a death
dealing jolt or a severe burn if
the tree is touched under certain
i conditions.
Instead of using electric lights
on these trees, Mr. Steed said, use
i tinsel and other decorations. Then
I use off-the-tree spotlights or flood
! lights, or possibly a revolving
j color light.
Tile holidays always increase the
lire hazard potential in homes.
Fires, burns, and fire-associated
accidents caused one out of four
I home-accident deaths last year,
| Mr. Steed said.
Some simple rules that might
I save your life or someone else’s
are: 1. Check a|l electric cords on
decorations and discard any that
I are frayed and worn before a short
circuit develops. Make sure new
sets bear the Underwriters’ Labo- |
1 ratories, Inc. label (UL), 2, Use’
’ metal glass, asbestos or other non- |
flammable material for Christmas |
। decorations where ve r possible. I
! When you must use combustible
materials be sure they are "flame
proofed”, particularly if they are
jto be placed near the tree. 3. Keep
green trees fresh as long as possi
. ble by mounting in a water con
| tainer. This makes them less com
* bustible. Do not leave the lights
I on when you are out of the house.
