are several things to consider'
such as: 1. Locate plant bed on
well-drained soil near enough to!
a water supply so it can be water

Mission Doctor
Tells First Day
Experiences
A letter received from Dr. W.
H. Vanßrackle relates most in-1
। terestingly the experiences and;
: impressions of his first day at
I The Evangelical United Brethren >
Mission in Beverly, Kentucky.
The former Pembroke man and ;
: Mrs. Vanßrackle went to Beverly!
i recently to work with the mission.
! Dr. Vanßrackle is connected with
' Red Bird Hospital.
After leaving Macon, where Dr. I
rVanßrackle practiced dentistry for'
; many years, the couple went to'
Richmond, Virginia, and more re-1
' cently to Flovilla, Ga. Following;
i is the letter:
“It was so good to get my home ;
paper. I was a little surprised ■
j to find recent letter printed.
“I would like to give you the!
! account of our first Sunday at Red i
' Bird Mission. We arrived at the!
I mission on Saturday noon. We|
I were received with open arms by i
! the doctors and nurses and was,
! soon shown our apartment locat-!
!ed in the nurses' home. We take i
I our meals in the nurses’ home.
“We had an early breakfast on I
: Sunday morning. The assistant;
superintendent and his wife had
! asked us to accompany them for
i an all-day meeting at one of the
: smaller mission stations just re
! cently opened, forty miles back
lup in the mountains. The new
mission is known as the I,end a

“Before reaching our destina
tion I wondered where we would
land and many times I wondered
if the car could make it there, for
many times they have to use a
jeep or go by horse back. Finally
we stopped at an old shack of
a house without running water
inside. The old house would have
you thinking how could anyone
live there.
“The house was nestled down
beside a creek. The meeting
house was an old store, more like
a barn with only one window, i
and an old pot-bellied stove fori
heat. It was a bitter cold day. ■
When we walked into the build- j
i ing we found twenty some odd!
! boys and girls and six or eight !
adults, that had come in from the
; surrounding community.
Two young girls had opened
! this mission a little over a year
ago. One of the girls was a
school teacher, originally from |
Indian!. The other, a young lady I
that was a registered nurse and:
I mid-wife, was originally from
! Pennsylvania.
I The little school marm that con
; ducted the Sunday School was ।
I certainly on the job. She had i
those children well trained. It
! was wonderful how those children I
' entered in. On this particular!
] Sunday the children put on the:
' Christmas pageant. One little j
girl about ten years of age quot-
I ed from memory the two chapters
! of St. Luke containing the Christ-!
' mas story.
All the characters such as Mary,
! Joseph and the Christ Child were :
\ there, and the manger. The
, angels, shepherds and wise men
were represented. You would have
been amazed how well this page
' ant was put on in an old store, i
It was impossible to keep back j
! the tears to see how well train
! ed those little mountain children j
1 j were. After the pageant the as-
I sistant superintendent and his i
. wife brought the Christmas mes-'
; sage. The wife used an autoharp |
j for the music.
The little school teacher then;
।! had us stay for lunch. You will j
: be surprised to know she rides;
I horseback 16 miles every day back!
•j and forth to school.
This one day alone, seeing the
work of those two girls was well
■ worth our coming to Red Bird
Mission. We feel sure the Lord i
i had a hand in our coming here.'
The challenge was great as we i
saw the needs of those fine moun
tain people.
We have a chapel in the hos
pital and devotions are conducted
every morning. Vesper services
three times a week.
We are happy to be here giv
ing of our services. We covet the
prayers of our Bryan County
friends. Yours in Christ, Caro and
Woodfin Vanßrackle.”
