The Meaning
Os Christmas
Rev. M. A. Murrau
Pastor, Richmond Hill
[laptist Church
Christmas is a short period of
the year when there is anticipa
tion and expectation. Small chil
dren are looking for Santa Claus.
Adults remember well the excite
ment and waiting for the day to
come when the last few days prior
to Christmas seemed unusually
long. When at last the day came

Jews of Old festament
times were familiar with the
of a coming .Messiah. This
deliverer would set them free from
their enemies, and cause wars to
ww. they believed. Their King
would be a ruler over all their
territory and defeat all other
w: i. . When Christ came and
i . ■ i to rule with such power,
and as they expected Him to favor
the Jews above all other people,
they rejected Him.
. Christmas is also a time of
realization and disappointment.
People hate to grow up, and all
are disappointed to find out the
truth about Santa. We like to
dream and dream, thinking that
life is only filled with glad sur
prises. Life, however, is more
than floating on air. It is real
and earnest—full of failures and
heartaches. The going gets rug
ged at times and all need lots of
encouragement and help. Christ
was born in Bethlehem 'of Judea
end the world calls his birthday
Christmas because we know He
can make life more meaningful
and strengthen us when we need
an eternal friend.
Again Christmas should be a
time for adoration and concern for
people. Christ was not born a
king in pomp and splendor. He
was born in a manger. He worked
as a carpenter in his father’s shop.
He became the world’s greatest
servant. He emptied his life for
I others and died the most despised
person of the first century, be
cause he loved a world and firm
ly stood for the truth. There were
others living besides the Jews.
Christ loved the others also. He
wished for them also to have a
Savior and share in the bounties
of His Creation. Jesus healed the
sick and suffering, told the story
of the good Samaritan, and com
: missioned His church to preach,
: teach, heal and educate in the
; spirit of love and compassion.
Finally the birth of Christ has
no meaning if separted from the
purpose of His coming and the
: dedication of life. Too many peo
ple think of it as a holiday rather
than a holy day. So many think
of self instead of Christ. Many
spend great amounts vt money
for gifts and give Christ the
crumbs. Some abuse their bodies
and other people made in the image
of God. Christians who really
know Christ as saviour and
acknowledge Him as Master of
their lives will want to give the
following things to Christ Sunday,
December 25th, 1960: Our hearts
... Luke 10:27-33; Our talents
. . . Matthew 25:16; Our bodies
I. . . Romans 12:1; Our service . . .
(Ephesians 5:16; Our money . . .
Malachi 3:10.
He has requested these things
lof His Stewards.
