Mr. Smith. 65, died early Mon
day morning at his home in Still
more after a brief illness.
Surviving are two sons. Cle
bourne L. Smith. Richmond Hill,
and Jerry Neal Smith, Augusta;
four daughters, Mrs. L, B. Dur
den, Jr., Atlanta. Mrs Harry
Fields, Augusta, Mrs. Frank
Davis, Jr., Savannah, and Mrs.
Eugene C. Davis, Jr., Augsburg.
Germany; one sister, Mrs. Gordon
Stephens, Augusta; and 12 grand
children.
MASON REUNION
IS SCHEDULED FOR
SUNDAY, JULY 22
The Mason reunion is being
planned for Sunday. July 22. with
letters already sent out by Robert
Fennell, secretary, outlining pre
liminary plans for the event.
Invited to the reunion, held each
year on the fourth Sunday in July,
are descendants of Elizabeth
Flanders Mason, Lizzie Hutchinson
Mason and Robert (Bob) Mason.
The gathering place for the family
occasion will be the Community
House in Pembroke, Dinner will
be served at one o'clock and the
business session will get underway
at 2 o'clock.
A congenial group spending this
weekend at Jekyll Island will be
Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Brannen and
children, Eric and Sharon, and Mr
and Mrs. H L. Speir. Jr, and chil
dren. Ronnie. Linda. Allen and
Laurette.

A special treat is in store for
members of the Brotherhood at
Beulah Baptist Church, according
to the Rev. Robert Fennell, pastor,
who is arranging the program.
Speaker at the meeting on Mon
day night, July 23, will be Jesse
. Coleman, prominent layman from
the Richmond Hill Baptist Church.
The program will get underway at
8 o’clock.
Mr. Coleman is an interesting
and well-informed speaker. He is
expected to bring an inspirational
message to member* of the Broth
’ trhood, all of whom are urged to
attend.

TO HONOR PASTOR

On Saturday night st 7:30 the
Rev. and Mrs Jame* McArn, will
he honored at a covered dish sup
per at Lawrence Baptist Church.
.Mr. McArn has resigned as pas
tor of the church, his final sermon
being on Sunday, July 22. He has
accepted a call to a church near
Savannah.
While pastor at Lawrence, Mr.
McArn has worked diligently for
the progress of the ehureh in all
departments. He and Mrs. McArn
have made many friends in the
community, and their leaving is re
gretted by the members of Law
1 rence Church as well as others.
Traveling to various places of
’ interest in Florida this week are
1 Miss Kathrine Floyd, Pembroke,
and Mr. and Mra. D. H. Edenfield,
Debra Edenfield. Brent and Reed
Edenfield, all of Savannah. They
will return U> their homes the last

Atlanta Man to
Be Principal of
Elementary School
A young Atlanta man, husband
of a former Pembroke girl, has
accepted the place of principal of
Dunwoody Elementary School in
Atlanta.
Harold Wells, whose wife is the
former Miss Nancy Purvis, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Purvis,
Sr., has been teaching in the At
lanta School system for several
years. Offer of the principalship
is indicative of the high regard
felt for him and his work by school
officials.
Wells is a Peabody College in
Nashville, Tenn, this summer tak
ing courses that will help him in
the efficient discharge of his new
duties as principal. While he is
away, Miss Jane Purvis, who
works at Capital Records in At
lanta, is with Mrs. Wells.
Recent visitors of Mrs. Well*
and Miss Purvis were Mr. and Mrs.
Carlton Purvis, Jr. and their
young son, Carlton. 111, from
North Augusta, S. C.

pearance in that pulpit.
The delightful affair was held
at the church's outdoor recreation
grounds. Giving a brief talk of
appreciation for the services of
the pastor arid his wife and ex
pre- slug regret at their leaving
was Mrs. Lester Whitten. Mr.;
Mount* gave a gracious response, i
assuring those gathered that as

Death of Foster
Shuman on Sunday
Is Shock
The death on Sunday morning of I
Foster Shuman, Sr., 47. at hi* \
home in the Blitchton community ;
wa* a shock to his many friends -
throughout the county.
Mr. Shuman, prominent Blitch
ton farmer, became ill Sunday!
morning and died within a short
time.
Services were held at Olive i
Branch Baptist Church at 5 o’clock

pastor, the Rev. R. T. Burns, and
the Rev. J. W. Groom*. Statesboro.

the wedding of their grandson,

James Edward Mayes.
The wedding took place at 3:30
at Aldersgste Methodist Church.

Each Team Wins,
Loses in P'broke
Softball League
• । Last week in the Pembroke Rec
reation Department’s senior Soft
ball League saw each of the four
teams win one game and lose one
game.
On Tuesday night, Carl Sikes of
Lane Oil and William Ennis of
State Bank tied up in the closest
pitching duel of the season so far.
The Bank came out on top by a 5-2
; score.
The second game saw another
close contest broken open in the
top of the seventh inning a* the
Harn team scored eight runs on
Shuman Supply and go on to win
13-5.
On Friday night the Tuesday
winners became losers. In the first
game Cari Sikes held the Ham
team, leader* of the League, score
less through the first five innings
while his teammates were scoring
six times. Lane went on to win
by a score of 9-4.
The second game of the evening
saw last-place Shuman Supply look
like a first place team in beating
the Pembroke State Bank team by
a 10 to 3 count.
