Cadet Smith Is
On Encampment
.
With AFROTC
Air Force ROTC Cadet Calvin
Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kyle
D. Smith, Pembroke, is attending
a 28-day summer training unit at
Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
Cadet Smith is a student at
Emory University in Atlanta, and
is majoring in Liberal Arts,
He will be graduated in June,
1968 and is expected to receive a
commission as a second lieutenant
in the U. S. Air Force.
The 28-day encampment is at
tended by all AFROTC cadets be
"tween their junior and senior years
in college. While stationed at Eg
lin, the world’s largest U. S, Air
Force base, Cadet Smith will re
eeive officer training in various
fields.
Mrs, T. J. Bacon is in Columbia,
8. C. with her daughter, Mrs,
Henry Eldridge, and Mr. Eldridge.

Mack Shuman Is
Elected Beulah
S. School Supt.
Mack Shuman, Pembroke, was
named recently as Sunday School
superintendent of Beulah Baptist
Church. A worker in the church
for some time, the election of Mr.
Shuman to the important post. in
dicates the interest he has shown
in its progress.
Mr. Shuman sueceeds R. J.
Strickland, Jr., under whose lead
ership the Sunday Sehool has made
unusual advancement.
Another post at the church filled
recently was that of Training Union
director, to which Jerriel Hutchin
son was elected. Mr. Hutchinson
is also a lay leader of the church
and will take the place of Mrs.
Robert Fennell, who is presently
Training Union director.
The two new officers, who will
begin their duties on October 1,
will meet with the nominating
committee to complete the selec
tion of the slate of officers who
will work with them next year.

mittee are Roy White, Curtis
;Blitch, R. J. Strickland, Jr., Ches
ter Sheffield and Mrs. Robert Fen
nell. The Rev. Robert Fennell,
pastor of the church, is an ex of
ficio member of the committee,
Chairman is Mr. Hutchinson.

Lions Club Free

Skating Program
Ends August 13
The Pembroke Lions Club has
announced that the free skating
program would end on Monday,
August 13,
The Lions Club has aided the
lPemhroko Reereation Department
by allowing the use of the roller
rink one night a week. There has
been no charge for thiz program.
The free skating sechedule has been
conducted during the summer,
The skating program has been
successful, according to Lions
Clab officiale. The average at
tendance has been about 65. Some
of the smaller children have beén
turned away for the lack of skates,
The majority of the children who
are skating are elementary chil
dren.
The Skating Rink will remain
open on Thursday and Saturday
nights with regular admission be
ing charged until further notice.

Germany, where he is a member
