Governor's Race
Causes Trouble
On Monday we visited a friend
of ours, and he was telling us his
troubles, and it fits so many of
us, we are passing the story on to
our readers without calling any
names. This friend ordinarily was
a Griffin man, but due to circum
stances was thrown into the San
ders crowd and everyone knew that
he was going to vote for Carl
Sanders for Governor. He told us
Monday that this was the first
time that he had ever made all
of his friends mad his friends that
are for Sanders are mad because
he is not out a whooping and a
hollering for Carl, and the friends
of his that are for Griffin are
mad with him because he is even
going to vote for Carl.
Yes, there are many in just the
same predicament. When you are
for a fellow they will get mad with
you if you don’t just tear your
hair out and go wild for your man,
and those that are for the other
fellow will be mad with you.
Funny old world after all.

Sanders Word Unreliable
States Regent Chairman
Carried below is a letter written to Carl Sanders, candidate for Governor, by Robert O.
Arnold, Chairman of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, and is evi
dence of the unreliability of the word of the candidate Carl Sanders. The letter tells Sanders
that Mr. Arnold cannot support him for Governor because promises he makes, he breaks for
"political expediency "
Covington, Georgia
July 12, 1962
“Hon. Carl Sanders
Dinkier Plaza Hotel
Atlanta, Georgia
“Dear Carl:
“I have your letter of July Bth. asking for my support in your campaign for the office of Gov
ernor. While you were campaigning for the office of Lieut. Governor. I committed my vote to
Marvin Griffin for the office of Governor.
“I plan to vote for Marvin because of his greal interest in education at all levels and because he
did so much for the University System of Georgia during the time he served as Governor.
“1 hasten to add that I would not vote for Mr. Griffin if I did not consider him a man of in
tegrity and ability. Four years of dealing with him as Chairman of the Board of Regents led me
to this conclusion.
“I would like to remind you. Carl, that during the legislative session of 1960 I sought your
help in defeating a constitutional amendment which I considered would be detrimental to the Uni
versity System ot Georgia. You assured me that you fell as I did and that you would use your
eitorts to deleat this amendment. When this bill was about to be voted on in the Senate, 1 came
back to you to see if you thought there was any chance of defeating this bill. You informed me
that the chance ot deteating the bill was hopeless. You also, at this time, explained to me that,
although you still felt the amendment should be defeated, it had become “politically expedient”
that our vote for the bill because it was going to pass by such a big majority.
“I am sure that you will recall that 1 expressed strong disappointment that you did not see fit
to vote your convictions on this bill.
“You will also recall that this amendment was soundly defeated in almost every county in the
State.
“If you are elected to the office of Governor, as a citizen of Georgia. I will do every thing I
can to help make your administration a successful one.
Sincerely, -
Robert O. Arnold.”
This is sufficient evidence of the caliber man tunning for the office of Governor of 4,000,-
000 Georgians.
