Rev. John Joyner of Savannah
will preach at the Baptist Church
Sunday at the morning and eve
ning services. The morning hour
is 11 o’clock and the evening serv
ices are at 7:30 o’clock. Rev. Joy
ner preached at this church re
cently. The church is without a
regular pastor since Rev. Corry
left to go to Augusta and Rev.
Joyner has been asked to return
this Sunday so that the church
might have its regular Sunday
services.
Bobby Purcell is getting around
these days. That is what the army
does for a fellow. You get a
chance to see the world. Relatives
of Bobby received word this week
from him that he had been trans
ferred to Fort Dix, N. J. Immedi
ately after his induction into the
army he was sent to Fort Bragg,
N. C.
Lucious L. Smith, S 2c, son of
Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Smith, of
Ellabelle, left October 1 to report
back to his naval base at Bain
bridge, Md. He has been spending
a twelve day leave with his rela
tives and friends, before being
shipped out to sea.

Mr. and Mrs. Hoke Duggar of
Sanford, Fla. have announced the
birth of a daughter, Brenda Joy.
Mrs. Duggar is the daughter of
Mrs. T. H. Tindol.

Ronnie Harvey had the mis
fortune to have his arm broken
f in two places during the past wek
end when it bore the brunt of a
falling goal post he waa trying
to put up.
The. eighth grade lad was at
home when the accident happened.

• Harvey, his mother carried him to
> Claxton and then on to Statesboro
i where he remained a patient in
, Bulloch County Hospital.
Ronnie has returned to his home
and is back at school in spite of
। the discomfort he is experiencing.

Mr. and Mrs. Kyle D. Smith and
Calvin Smith spent the weekend
in Calhoun with Mr. and Mrs.
Kyle Smith, Jr. and young son,
Kyle, 111. Mr. and Mrs. Smith,
Sr. went by Emory University in
Atlanta to pick up Calvin before j
going on to Calhoun.

TV Tower to Be
PTA Speaker
A program of unusual interest
to parents and friends of the
school will be given Monday night
at 8 o’clock at the Bryan County
High School Parent Teacher As
sociation.
Speaker for the meeting will be
James Rodgers, resident senior en
gineer for WEGA, who is in
charge of construction of the edu
cational television tower in Pem
broke. Mr. Rodgers is enthusias
tic over the possibilities of educa
tional television for this section.
Throughout the school day it is
understood that WEGA will tele
cast half-hour programs dramati
cally teaching biology, mathema
tics, music, science, Georgia his
tory and Spanish. In the evening
WEGA will return to the air to
offer programs for adult enter
tainment and education.
At the business session, at
which Mrs. C. N. McGee, presi
dent will preside, plans for the
annual Halloween Carnival will
be outlined and committees nam
ed.
The program was arranged by
Mrs. J. W. Kicklighter, vice presi
dent and program chairman, who
also announced that the devotional
would be given by the Rev. Roscoe.

Hens Get State
Reserve Champion
For B. C. 4-H'er
When Gary Cowart accepted the
responsibility of raising u flock
of chicks as a 4-H project in the
State Sears-Roebuck Poultry chain
he was a long ways from realizing
that pullets from his flock would
he declared the second best in the
state.
The young 4-H member, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Cowart of
Ellabell, made his first step to
ward reserve Grand Champion of
the state when his pullets and
those of Lloyd Murray. Richmond
Hill, were judged best in the coun
ty and chosen to go to the South
eastern Fair in Atlanta.
Gary is a member of the 7th
Grade 4-H Club at Black Creek,
and Lloyd belongs to the 6th Grade
4-H Club at Richmond Hill. The
latter is the son of Mi. and Mrs.
Floyd Murray.
D. E. Medders, county agent,
who advised Gary about prob
lems concerning the raising of his
chicks, was notified that Gary’s
pullets had won the reserve Grand
Champion title and that he was
to be the guest of the Fair. Gary,
Mr. Cowart and Mr. Medders
spent Saturday at the Fair in At
lanta.
The young 4-H member received
two cash awards for his unusually
fine pullets.
Newcomer Accepts
Teaching Place
In Chatham
A newcomer to Pembroke has
accepted a place with the Chat
ham County School system, but
she and her husband will continue
to make their home here.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Merritt mov
ed to Pembroke with their two
children, Julie, 22 months, and
Freddie, 3 months, several weeks
ago and have already made a place
for themselves in the community.
Mr. Merritt is a representative
of Watkins Products and Mrs.
Merritt began Monday as a teach
er of the third grade at Pooler.
Mr. Merritt expects to enter
Georgia Teachers College in
Statesboro later on. He will study
for the Baptist ministry.
Mrs. Merritt, the former Miss
Betty Griffin, is a native of Grif
fin. She is a graduate of Mercer
University.
Mr. and Mrs. Merritt are mem
bers of the Pembroke Baptist
Church.

Garden Clubbers
To Attend Meet
Os Assoc. Clubs
Leading the delegation of mem
bers of the Pembroke Garden Club
to the fall session of the Associat
ed Garden Clubs of Southeast
Georgia at Mount Vernon on
Thursday are Mrs. W. C. Payne
and Mrs. N. L. Ham.
Mrs. Payne is attending the 29-
club organization as president of
the Pembroke Garden Club, while
Mrs. Ham will preside at the busi
ness session of the meeting Thurs
day as president of the Associat
ed Clubs.
Several other local members are
expected to be on hand when the
larger organization, with its mem
bership of 709 women, meets at
Brewton Parker College.
Dyson Flanders, Brunswick, will
be guest speaker. Flanders is a
University of Florida ornamental
horticultural graduate, and form
er landscape superintendent at Sea
Island.
Music will be provided by the
department of music of Brewton
Parker Junior College, under the
direction of Mrs. J. A. Kinsaul.
Registration will begin at 10:30
Thursday morning. Members are
invited to bring horticultural
specimens. Luncheon will be serv
ed at the college.
Mrs. Hendry Is
Hostess to
E'bell HD Club
On Tuesday afternoon, October
2, Mrs. F. L. Hendry was hostess
to members of the Ellabell Home
Demonstration Club. During the
social hour she served delicious
refreshments.
An interesting demonstration on
accessories was given by Miss
Coleta Loper, home demonstration
agent, which showed how one
dress could be used for several
different occasions by using ap
propriate accessories.
Mrs. C. C. Cowart, president,
presided at the business session,
at which time plans were discuss
ed for the booth to be entered in
the Coastal Empire Fair.
Attending the meeting were Mrs.
C. C. Cowart, Mrs. F. L. Hendry,
Mrs. J. W. Miller, Miss Barbara
Hourst, Miss Coleta Loper, and
Mrs. Hubert Lee.

Bureau Meeting

Bryan County Farm Bureau
members and their families at
tended the annual meeting of the
organization Friday night, enjoy
ing a shrimp supper and hearing
a discussion of the Overall Ec
onomic Development Program.
By actual count 110 people were
at the meeting to hear Joe Tan
ner, Millen, co-ordinator of Rural
Areas Development. Unusual in
terest was shown and expressed
in Tanner’s talk as he outlined a
prepared plan for progress in
several areas of the county’s ec
onomic and general welfare.
Farm Bureau officers elected
for 1963 were J. T. Stubbs, presi
dent; H. L. Page, vice president;
and H. B. Warnell, secretary and
treasurer. Members of the nom
inating committee were James R.
Lewis, Hugh C. Lanier and Ivey
Smith.
Preparing the supper was a
committee of Farm Bureau women
assisted by Miss Coleta Loper,
home demonstration agent, and D.
E. Medders, county agent.
