Local Club Wins
In Assoc. Garden
Club Fall Show
The Pembroke Garden Club and
local individual horticultural exhi
bitors were awarded ribbong in the
fall flower show of the Associated
Garden Clubs of Southeast Geor
gia held in Jesup on Saturday and
Sunday of last week.
The two classes assigned to the
Pembroke club were “Halloween
Capers” and “Tinker Bell,” the
latter to be in miniature. Mem
bers of the committee appointed
to make the exhibits were Mrs, L.
M. Anderson, Mrs. U, J. Bacon,
Mrs, W. R, Deal and Mrs. Alten
Elrick.
The “Halloween Capers” ar
rangements won third place in its
class and was exhibited for the
club under the names of Mrs L.
M. Anderson and Mrs. W. R. Deal,
who took the lead in its planning.
The third place winner, now being
shown in the Pembroke Post Of
fice was on a black base and sea- ‘
tured orange dahlias, treated ouk%
leaves, and three owls made from ‘
pine cones perched on a weather
ed tree made from a limb, |
Planning “Tinker Bell” for the
club was Mrs. Alton Elrick as-(
sisted by Mrs. A, V. Anderson, the
entry being in their names as
representative of the Pembroke
Garden Club. The miniature,
which won second place in its class,
used a tiny china fairy, in a re
elining position with her head
propped up on her hands as the in
terest center. In the background
were birds, and permanent ma
terial, all sized to scale, the only
fresh material being small pink
flowers and an off-white spray
from a bush. The entire scene was
on a foil base.
Horticultural winners were Mrs.
U. J. Bacon, a blue and red rib
bon for roses; Mrs. W. C. Payne,
red ribbon for a rose; and Mrs,
L. M. Anderson, yellow ribbon for
a dahlia specimen.

Agents Attend
Annual Cons.
The agricultural agént and
home demonstration agent of Bry
an County attended the annual
conference for state extension
agents at Rock Eagle 4-H Clubi
Center last week.
Nearly 600 county and state
gtaff members of the Georgia
Agricultural Extension Service
were at the session at which Misgs
Coleta Loper, home demonstration
agent, and D. E. Medders, county
agent, were present from Monday
through Thursday.
Dr. Henry L. Ahlgren, associate
{director of Wisconsin Extension
Service, praised the work of Geor
gia agents and set new goals for
them in the state’s changing agri
cultural scene. He challenged
Georgians to provide a ‘“full meas
ure of educational leadership and
educational statesmanship.”
Also at the conference was Mrs.
Carolyn Warnell Bryan, home
demonstration agent in Chatham
!County, who this week is in Chi
cago, 1111., at the convention of
the National Home Demostration
Agents Association. The conven
tion began Sunday and contniues
through Friday.

|Trophy Is Shown
|At Garden Club
'. The handsome silver trophy de
| noting most civie improvement for
1961-62 of clubs belonging to the
| Associated Garden Clubs of South
east Georgia was exhibited at the
October meeting of the Pembroke
Garden Club held on Thursday af
ternoon of last week.
Hostesses at the meeting were
Mrs. J. Gordon Bacon and Mrs.
R. B, Reed. During the social
period they served delicious re
freshments,
| The program centered around
planting and are of bulbs, prepara
tion of the ground, and the care
of bulbs during non-planting sea
sons. Giving the interesting and
informative discussion was Mrs. L.
!M. Anderson.
| Garden suggestions, including
lawn recommendations, were made
by Mrs. A. V. Anderson. The in
spirational was given by Mrs. U.
J. Bacon at the opening of the
meeting.
The club is eligible to keep the
civic improvement trophy for six
months, sharing it with the Clax
ton Garden Club with which the
local club tied. The silver trophy
will be displayed in the Pembroke
State Bank and the Pembroke
Post Office during the six months.
Presiding at the business session
was Mrs. W, C. Payne, president.
The club discussed the idea of
sponsoring a canna sale since no
pansies will be available this year.
Clean-up Week is to be worked
out with the mayor and council at
their next meeting, the chairman
and members of the Civie Commit
tee meeting with the council.
The winning flower arrangement
on “Halloween Capers” was exhib
ited by Mrs, Charles F. Warnell,
and the best horticultural speci
men by Mrs. U. J. Bacon. Yard
of the month was won by Mr. and
Mrs. W. R. Deal. Mrs. Warnell
also won the door prize, an attrac
tive bud vase.

AT RURAL AREAS
DEVELOPMENT MEET
Two members of the Rural
Areas Development committee
from Bryan represented the county
at a short course held Tuesday at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural
College in Tifton.
The one-day meeting was held
for the purpose of pointing out to
county representatives Rural|
Areas Development aids available
from the Areas Redevelopment
Act, and other agencies from
‘which loans might be available for
development projects.

principal speaker recently at a
meeting of the Richmond Hill
Garden Club,
The subject discussed by Dr. I.
M. Wofford was measurement of
soil in plant growth. He talked
on how to improve the physical
texture of soil in the Coastal area,
enumerating the soil ingredients
as sand, silt and clay. Dr. Wof
ford explained how to prepare soil
for both gardening and landseap
ing in the coastal area,
Presiding at the business ses
sion was Mrs, Leslie Long, presi
dent. She announced the division
that the Richmond Hill Garden
Club was to fill at the fall flower
show of the Associated Garden|
Clubs of Southeast Georgia which |
was held at Jesup. .

Study Is Open to

Leaders of the Woman's Mis
sionary Union of the Ogeechee
River Association have planned a
series of leadership courses for
councilors of Girls Auxiliary, Sun
beam, and Y. W. A. organizations
of all churches in the association,
according to Mrs. W. W. Mann,
associational W, M. U. president.
The opening session will be on
I.\londny, October 29, at States
boro First Baptist Church, from
9:30 to noon, the two morning ses
sions being reserved for Girls Aux
iliary and Subeam leaders.
Courses for councilors of Young
Women's Auxiliary will be pre
sented on the nights of October 29
and November 5.
The 71, hours required to at
tain cards of accreditation will be
completed if both classes are at
tended.
One of the goals of 1962-63, ac
cording to Mrs. Mann, is 756 per
cent of all leaders holding cards
of leadership training.
Those attending are asked to
bring sandwiches for lunch.

Air Mail service is available to

where American servicemen are
stationad. Packages to be sent
by air mail should be mailed not
later than December 1 to assure
deliverey before December 25.
Careful attention should also be
given to postal regulations con
cerning the wrapping and protec
tion so that the gifts will arrivei

YOUNGSTER IS
CLASS PRESIDENT
Os interest in Pembroke is the
anouncement that Skipper Ellison
has recently been elected president
of his class at Montgomery-Haly
con School in Savannah.
The 8-year-old youngster is in
the third grade at the elementary
school. He is the son of Mrs. John
Clark Blanton of Savannah.
For several years Skipper lived
in Pembroke with his grandpar
ents, Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Sims.
Mrs. Blanton is the former Miss
Mary Sims. i

office at the recent annual meet

ciation.
The election of officers was held
on Friday at Lawrence Church at

erator of the association for the
year 1962-63. ~
