Miss Shirley Dukes, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Dukes of
Pembroke, has been accepted as
an alto in the Mercer University
Glee Club. Dr. Arthur L. Rich,
director of Music at Mercer, states
that the club is one of the finest
of recent years and that attend
ance at rehearsals averages 130
students. Miss Dukes is also a
member of the A Capella Choir.
Next Thursday will be the first
peacetime Thanksgiving Day since
1941, and the people of the nation,
state, county, and town have a lot
to be thankful for. We truly hope
that the day will be spent in a
spirit of Thankfulness for the vic
tory that was given us. Without
the aid of God the war would not
have ended as it has, nor would
so many of our young men be re
turning to their families and
friends.
At one of the best basketball
games this season the Pembroke
girls of the Bryan County High
School won a closely fought game
from the girls of Richmond Hill,
while the boys were outclassed by
the Richmond Hill boys. There
was a large crowd out cheering for
both teams, and it was considered
one of the best games of the sea
son.
The many friends of Rev. M. M.
Pierce will be pleased to know
that he has l»een returned to Pem
broke for another term of service.
Rev. Pierce has made many friends
since coming to Pembroke two
years ago, and they are happy over
the fact that he will serve them
as their Methodist preacher for
another year.
The Methodists have made great
headway towards raising funds for
a new church during the past year
and now that Rev. Pierce is back
for another year it is felt that he
will be able to raise the remaind
er and that soon we will have a
new Methodist Church here

years ago. E. A. Hinely has ar
rived after a tour of duty aboard
a battle wagon out in the Pacific
where he had many a “close
shave.” Frank Hendricks has ar
rived back home after serving in
the Pacific where he saw action
aboard some of the landing craft
and other Naval ships. He too
looks fine. J. D. Cason is on his
