Pembroke Man
Makes Headlines
In Bowling
The following story was taken
from the Savannah Morning News
and tells about the claim to fame
of a former Pembroke man, W. C.
Strickland, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Delmas Strickland.
Although known in bowling cir
cles in Savannah as “Doug,” the
young man has a host of friends
in this section who congratulate
him on his bowling achievements.
The story is by Marcus Holland,
staff writer.
Ever have the urge to average
in the high 180 s?
Then do like Doug Strickland--
lead bowling books.
“That’s how I learned to bowl,” |
Doug recalls. “I just read every
bowling book that I could get my
hands on.”
It must be a good way to learn
because the Pembroke native is
averaging 182 in the Westside
Scratch League at Tenpin Bowl.
He carries a 178 mark in the
Westside Industrial and a 175 in
the Victory Scratch.
Four years ago the bowling bug
bit Strickland. He began to empty

Solve Christmas
Gift Problem by
Giving Journal
Orders are now being taken for
the Pembroke Journal to be sent
as Christmas gifts to members of
the family and friends. The easiest
way in the world to settle the
Christmas gift problem and one
of the best is to give the official,
home-town paper.
There are few other gifts that
can remind the recipient of the
donor each week during the year
in such a pleasant manner. Bryan
countians who have moved away
are eager to get news of their
home-town and of home-town peo
ple. In this day of hurry and
bustle not many relatives or
friends take time to sit down and
write a long letter outlining the
interesting events that have oc
curred.
In the Pembroke Journal they
will be told of happings little and
big, that they would otherwise not
know. They will be kept abreast
of schools, politics, social affairs,
new babies, buildings and other
things dear to the heart of any
one away from home.
Especially appreciative of the
paper arc students away at school
and young men and women away
in service.
The Journal will take a gift
subscription at any time with the
notation of when to send the at
tractive gift certificate advising
the recipient of the generous
Christmas gift. The paper will
oe started immediately, held until
the Christmas issue or any other
designated time.
Why not pick up your telephone,
drop a notice in the mail, or come
by and make arrangements for
your gifts and let your mind be
free to enjoy the approaching
holidays.
Commissioners
Are Opening up
Circle Drive
The Bryan County Board of
Commissioners is contributing to
the economy and attractiveness of
the city by improving the roads
in Circle Drive and opening up
others.
Another far-sighted and civic
action taken by the County Board
is the work being done on the
campus of the new gymnasium.
Much more space has been given
students for recreation activities,
besides making for a more attrac
tive appearance of the school
grounds.
The new loads around Circle
Drive will encourage those who
are in the market for new homes
to choose one of the attractive
sites in this location. Several new
residences have been built in the
past few years, and indications
are that others will be going up.
J. Dixie Harn, chairman, said
the Commissioners want to do
everything they can to help the
county and, in so doing, to help
the people in the county.

Battle Shaping
Up For Offices at
Richmond Hill
What was thought one time
would be a tame election, now look
as if it might develop into a very
interesting contest for Mayor and
for four places on the Council in
the first City Election to be held
on Tuesday, December 4th.
The official ticket has two run
ning for Mayor, Hon. I. C. Casey,
Sr., the present Mayor, and Hon.
Louis C. Gill who is at present one
of the Councilmen. There are eight
running for Council, they are
Thomas E. Darieng; Elvin V.
Rushing, John L. Lewis, Cyril E.
Kicklighter, John B. Milono, Roth
ell Wasson, J. A. Johnson, and Ru
ben Roland Harrison. Four of these
eight are to be elected. We are
not just sure which of those above
are on the present Council but we
are sure that Mr. Darieng and Mr.
Lewis are members of the present
City Council and possibly Mr.
Harrison is among those now serv
ing.
Just what is back of the move
is unknown, but there is a “whisp
er” going the rounds that if “cer
.ain” ones are elected that an ef
fort will be made to make a
“Sahara” out of the Village. This
■is merely a rumor and there may
[not be anything to that.
The City has only been charter
ed for less than a year, and those
now serving were named to their
places in the bill which Chartered
the City of Richmond Hill.
All the men running are good
men, and we look to see an inter
esting race come up out of the
City Election on December 4th

void that can only he filled by her

happen to prevent Mrs. Dixon from
returning home.
