Jcquirity Peans—
Poison Potential
In recent weeks, the Jequirity
bean has made its appearance in
the Southeastern States in several
retail novelty stores as a bead
used in necklaces or on dolls or
similar toys.
Doctor W. D. Lundquist of the
Bryan County Health Department ,
would like to alert everyone to the
highly poisonous quality of this
| bean If chewed by a child, it can .
cause violent sickness in hours and ।
death within twelve days. The
bean is small, hard-shelled and
either black or red and black. “The (
Jcquirity bean is attractive but (
deadly,” says Dr. Lundquist. (
“Please check your children’s toys,
and prevent an accident that could (
be fatal.”
Anyone seeing these beans for
sale in any fashion, should notify
the Bryan County Health Depart
ment at once.

THE PEMBROKE JOURNAL
Jesus' Years of Preparation
Editor’s note: This is the second in a series of six articles
appearing in The Pembroke Journal condensed from Charles L.
Allen’s new book, The Life of Christ, copyrighted by Fleming
H. Revell Company. Used by permission.
Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast ot
passover. The year Jesus was twelve they went as usual, along
with many other people. Afterward, they started back home m
Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and Mary suppose e
was in the group until that night when they could not find him.
They went back to Jerusalem and after searching for three days
found him in the temple. He was with the teachers, listening to
their conversations and asking them questions. These men were sur
praised at how much he understood and the answers he gave. When
Joseph and Mary saw Jesus, they could hardly believe it, and Mary
said, “Son, why hast thou dealt with us? behold, thy father and
have sought thee sorrowing.”
Jesus replied, “How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that
I must be about my Fathers business?” But his parents did not
undertsand. He then went back home with them and was an obedi
ent son; but his father wandered about the meaning of many of
the things he said.
And Jesus grew in mind and body and in his relations with
Clod and men.
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when
Jesus was about thirty years of age, John the Baptist came to the
Jordan, crying: “Repent: for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.
Large crovds came to hear John preach, confessed their sins
and were bautiz.ed by him in the Jordan river. John wore a camels
hair coat and a skirt made out of skin. He ate locusts and wild
honey.
When he saw so many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come
to hear him, he said to him, “O generation of vipers, who hath
warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore ;
fruits meet for repentance.”
The people asked him, “What shall we do?”
He answered them, “He that hath two coats, let him impart to
him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
Also, tax collectors came to him to be baptized and they asked
him, "Master, what shall we do?” He replied, “Exact no more than
that which is appointed you.”
Likewise the soldiers asked him, “What shall we do?” He said •
to them, "Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and ,
be content with yours wages.”
As the people were expecting great things from John, and ;
wondering if he were Christ, he said to them, “I indeed baptize you
with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose'
shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the ।
Holy Ghost and with fire.”
Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized.
John discouraged him, saying, "I have need to be baptized of thee,
and comest thou tome?”
Jesus replied, “Suffer it to be so now, for thou it becometh us
to fulfill all righteousness.”
Then John baptized him and. when Jesus came out of the water,
the heavens opened up and he saw the Spirit of God coming down
like a dove and lighting upon him. Then a voice from heaven said,
“This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
At this time Jesus was about thirty years of age.
Afterward Jesus felt led by the Spirit to get away into the
wilderness. There he was tempted by the devil. He went without
food for forty days and nights and he became very hungry. Then
the tempter came to him and aid. "If thou be the Son of God, com
mand that these stones be made bread. Jesus answered. It is
written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word
j that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
Then the devil took him up on a high mountain and showed
him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. The
devil said to him, “All this power will I give thee, and the glory
of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will
give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.”
Jesus replied, “Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written.
Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou
serve.”
Then the devil brought Jesus to Jerusalem, set him on a pinnacle
of the temple and said to him, "If thou be the Son of God, cast
thyself down from hence: for it is written, He shall give his angels
charge over thee, to keep thee: and in their hands they shall bear
thee up, lest at one time thou dash thy foot against a stone.”
Jesus answered, "It is said, “Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy
God.”
When the devil ended these temptations, he left him for the
time being. Then angels came and ministered unto him. Jesus
returned to Galilee in the power of the spirit and news about him
went throughout the countryside. He taught in their synagogues
and was praised by all.
