A WALK IN THE WOODS OF
BRYAN COUNTY
With D. E. Medders,
County Agent
The forest industry in Georgia
is the state’s second or third
largest industry. Georgia forest
landowners are selling almost
S2OO million worth of timber
products each year.
Bryan County has a good in
come from forest products but
we can increase it with better
management and better utiliza
tion.
Forest income and production
figures are not published every
year but in 1961 the forest income
of Bryan County was reported at
$1,928,271. This included money
received from sale of the raw
wood products plus the value of
primary manufacture. In the
case of Bryan County, the pri
mary manufacture consists most
ly of sawing logs into boards or
other material.
There is a great opportunity in
Georgia for more secondary man
ufacturing of timber products.
Much of our lumber and other
forest products are shipped out of
state to be further manufactured.
We need these jobs and the pay
rolls. More of the finished prod
ucts should be made in Georgia.
We should plan toward more

manufacturing of forest products '
in Bryan County.
Income from the sale of stand
ing timber is only the beginning J
of the forest economy. For each 1
• SI.OO of standing timber sold, ‘
look what’s added to tire econ- 1
omy—sl.44 in harvesting, $3.06 1
in primary manufacture, $2.60 in
secondary manufacture and $1.32 1
1 in transportation and marketing.
■ This adds up to a value of $9.42 ;
for each dollar’s worth of timber
• sold by our farmers.
With more manufacturing with- i
in the state, or within Bryan
County, this total figure could ’
- run much higher still. i
Our goal in Bryan County ’
■ should be to grow’ good timber— 1
furnish the processors with the 1

work toward more utilization and ’
