REP. HAGAN CALLS ALCOHOLISM
BIG HEALTH PROBLEM IN U. S.
Congressman G. Elliott Hagan, testifying this week before
the House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce,
caled alcoholism one of the major health problems facing the
nation today.
Congressman Hagan was testifying in support of a bill he
introduced to create a Federal Commission on Alcoholism.
He said, “Today, there are more than five million persons in
the United States suffering from alcoholism. One out of every
13 men, aged 20 and over, is an alcoholic. Despite efforts to
combat the disease, the ratio of case; of alcoholism per 100
adults continues to climb.”
Rep. Hagan said the alcoholic “must be considered a sick
person and we must realize that his illness affects all those
around him."
In citing the need for a new program to combat alcoholism,
Rep. Hagan said, “The approach to treatment of this disease

In explaining the Commission his bill would establish, Rep.
Hagan said:
“The seven-member Commission would be charged with the
responsibility of studying and conducting research into the prob
lems of alcoholism, including methods and facilities available
for the care, treatment and rehabilitation of alcoholics.
“The bill also provides that the Commission may establish
and maintain hospitals, clinics, institutions, outpatient stations,
and other facilities for the care of alcoholics voluntarily applying
for treatment.
“Such a Commission would cooperate with, and provide as
sistance to state authorities which are authorized to provide for
the commitment of alcoholics for treatment and rehabilitation.”
Witnesses from all sections of the country, including three
other Congressmen, testified in support of the Commission pro
posed by Rep. Hagan.

Plans are shaping up in a
very fine way for 4-H Day at
the Soutseastern Fair, Satur
day, October 9. A program that
will be interesting and educa
tional will be provided 4-H Club
members and all others present.
Two 4-H county winners in
the Poultry Chain entered their
two best laying hens into com
petition Monday. They are Rosa
Guterriez, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Lonnie Tucker of Ellabell,
and Andrew Smith, son of Mr.
and Mrs. C. C. Smith of Rich
mond Hill.
Four-H day will officially
get underway at 11:00 a.m.,
with an assembly program at
the Fair Center. The Fair Cen
■ ter is located in the center
of the Exhibition Buildings,

ter and register.
At the assembly, there will
be a short program featuring:
