Auto Inspection Deadline Is Closing In
By FRANK WELLS
This is a law that is hard
to beat. All the officer has to
do is look at your windshield
to know if you are violating
the law or not.
"The law is the law,” said
Col. Lowell Conner of the
Georgia State Patrol, "and
we are going to enforce it.”
This particular law, which
Col. Conner is vitally inter
ested in, is the vehicle inspec
tion law. And this law goes
into effect on November 1.
Persons violating the law
will be guilty of a misde
meanor, said Col. Conners,
and the penalty will be "about
the same as driving a car
without a license.”
CAPTAIN ED MINK, of the
state patrol, said that about
1.000,000 Georgia vehicles had
already been inspected, but
that there were 500 - 600.000
still needing the stickers to
show the car is safe.
“There is going to be a ter
rible traffic jam around the
inspection stations on the last
day of October if motorists
don’t decide right now to get
their cars checked,” Capt.
Mink said.
He said that there were
2,073 "bonded and licensed”
inspection stations throughout
the state which can check the
vehicles which come under
the law.
And the ones that come un
der the law? . . . Anything
on wheels which is driven by
a motor and which uses Geor
gia s highways, Capt. Mink
said.
CAPT. MINK pounted out
that any discrepancy noted

Proud Os Home
When we were coming up as
a boy at Statesboro we lived q*
South Main Street at the inter
section of Grady and South
Main Streets, and just back of
us on Grady was the Dunk Mc-
Dougald home, and it was there
that J. D. McDougald, Sr., of
Claxton was a boyhood friend
of Ye Editor, our back yards
butted up against each other,
and we were about the same
age, and the McDougald’s were
our good friends, and naturally
the Miller boys and girls got
along with the McDougald boys
and girls.
But as the years have gone
by we have seen the McDoug
ald boys all get rich, and the
girls also, and the Miller’s are
still a struggling along, but
the friendship between Duncan
McDougald and Frank Miller
still holds good.
We were up there collecting
his subscription and selling
him an ad, for his big Ford
business, when he asked that we
go with him to see his home,
while the bookkeeper wrote the
check for us.
We have been in many fine
homes, but truly can say that
we have never been in a nicer
one, it is located on a large lot,
containing acres of land, and is
built and equipped just like Mrs.
McDougald wished, and we went
through the home and was
amazed that Claxton has a
home that was as nice as it is.
We are not gqing to attempt
to describe it, but if any of our

“This program will certain
ly upgrade cars,” Capt Mink
said, “and we hope it will up
grade some mechanics. If a
motorist has some complaint
about the service at an in
spection station, we wan( to
hear about it. What we are
after is making cars safe,
and that is all.”
According to Capt. Mink,
your car doesn't even have
to have an engine in it if the
lights, brakes, wheel align
ment and tires are all inngood
condition.
“THE INSPECTION checks
the headlight alignmnt, all
outside lights on the car, the
foot brakes, turn signals, re
flectors (partciularly on
trucks), the rear view mir
ror, the horn, windshield wip
ers, and seat belts on cars
made this year,” Capt. Mink
said.
“There must not be more
than 30 degrees play in the
steering wheel and no leaks
in power steering assemblies,”
he said.
Capt. Mink said that Geor
gia would honor any other
state’s inspection system un
til a visiting or newly ar
rived motorist can get his
car checked. Other newly ar
rived citizens in Georgia have
five days to get their cars
checked, according to Capt.
Mink.
“WE WILL save lives with
this program,” he said. “We
need the patience and the
understanding of the public
to help lis enforce this legis
lation.”
