The elections were held by
mail and ballots were tabulated
publicly by the incumbent Coun
ty Committee September 22, at
10:00 a.m. at the ASCS office.
C o m m u n ity committeemen
automatically become delegates
to a County Convention where
farmers are elected to fill va
cancies on the ASC County
Committees. They also select
the one to serve as chairman,
vice-chairman, member, First
and Second alternates to the
County committee. The con
vention was held September 26
at 10:00 a.m. at the ASCS of
fice. County Committee mem
bers are Chairman, H. L. Page;
Vice-Chairman, W. S. Thomson;
Member, H. L. Speir, Sr.; First
Alternate, H. H. Hagan; Sec
ond Alternate, W. A. Shuman.
Terms of office for county
committeemen are on a 3-year
basis, with one new member
normally being elected each year
at a convention of newly elect
ed ASC community committee
men. The situation varies, how
ever, according to the number
of actual vacancies on the com
mittee. In addition, first and
second alternates are elected
for 1 year each.
Mr. Page is serving his third
year of a 3-year term, Mr.
Speir is serving his second
year, and Mr. Thomson was re
elected this year. The newly
elected alternates are H. H.
Hagan of Pembroke and W. A.
Shuman of Eilabell.
The ASC farmer-committee
system is unique. No other
group of citizens has so direct
a voice in developing and run
ning Government programs.
Farmers eligible to take part
in programs administered by
the committee first elect com
munity committeemen, who in
turn elect county committee
men. While the county com
mittee is in actual charge of
administering the programs
locally, including expenditures
of Federal funds, the commun
ity committeemen lend operat
ing assistance where needed
and are particularly responsible
for keeping their neighbors in-
merchandise. It’s Standard’s 80 years’
experience in farm fuels and lubricants,
plus a first-hand knowledge of your
needs. For matchless service, you
can depend on your Standard
man—he delivers! We take
better care of your equipment.

The elected committees are
not Federal office holders. Con
gress holds the Department of
Agriculture responsible, and
the Department in turn re -
lies on the judgment and lead
ership of the locally elected
farmers an dthe county office
employees. The county office
serves as the headquarters for
farmer business connected with
program participation.
Major ASC activities in Bry
an County include the Agricul
tural Conservation Program,
price-support loans, storage fa
cility loans, the feed grain pro
gram, the wheat program, the
upland cotton program, the con
servation reserve, cropland ad
justment, and allotment and
marketing quota programs.
Total farm program business
handled by the. ASCS County
offices in Bryan County last
year amounted to $124,963.22,
which both improved the income
of farm producers and
strengthen the economy of the
whole area.
