THAT CHUKCH BOW,
Kiddle, Gordon County, G»„
94tb, 1897.
Messrs. Editor w, W e, the Ever,
green Baptist church of Christ, in
justice to the cause of Truth, and
the facts in the erne at issue, very
moek regret that we are forced to
go into the columns of the secular
papers of our country with local
church troubles, but since it lias be¬
come absolutely necessary we ask
Apace in your paper, to present live
follow ing reply to an article which
first appeared iu the Jiwpleeute and
Miijkav News, July 15th and With,
respectively, and published “by re¬
quest” over the official (?) signature
of J. N. Barker and James ('ouch
and dated April 24, 1897.
First; The article which appear¬
ed in the Christian Index last May.
in regard to the exclusion of B. G.
Barker, instead of being ‘'utterly
false”, was mVK to the facts in the
ease.
Second; Instead of Evergreen
Baptist church “bolding charges a
giinst B, F, Bright, O, G. Jackson,
and four othura for Scriptural error*
and “excluding them from the church
previous to the inception of the arli
ale in question,” (the Index article,)
B, G. Parker and twenty-five others
Were excluded front the Evergreen
Baptist aharek of Cfiri «t, April 24th,
1897; Parker and twenty others of
the number bavjug been charged a
month previous to tbmr . exolutum. .
from tb« church.
The following taken from the
church book of records are the char,
gas upon which all these parties
were excluded; First,—By motion
preferred a charge against Bro. R,
Q, Parker, J. M. Couch, W. L. Johns
et sj, for falsely accusing Bro. B. F.
Bright as being a her etio and preach¬
ing heresy. Second —That the said
It, G. Parker was guilty of unbroth
rrly and unohrivtian conduct of
disturbing the services in a very
disorbarly way. (On M’oh, 27,1897.)
Third.- That tue said It. G, Parker,
J. M, Couch, W. L. Johns, at ai, at
our last meeting, treated the church
and Word of God with great con¬
tempt in disorderly leaving the ser.
vices and conference, Fourth.—
That he, It. G. Parker, about two
years ago got Bro. E. W. Lewis to
go bis security for twenty-five or
thirty dollars worth of corn, giving
said Bro. Lewis a mortgage on his
tnule and wagon to secure him(Lew
is,)against loss, since which time said
Parker, Bro, Lewis says, has traded
the mule and wagon without first
paying the debt, and that he still
owes about felve dollars on it,
which was, virtually, trading Bro,
Lewis’ property, which was very
wrong and disorderly and unchris¬
tian and unbrotberly. Filth.—That
they, R, G, Parker, J. M. Couch, W,
L- Johns, J, ii. Couch, Rebecca
Couch, Claud Baker, Vin Mathis,
Joe EUis, J. L. Mooney, Joe Baker,
Cass Johns, Thomas Johns, Walt

Mooney, Ange Walraven, Line Wal
raveo, M. J- Baker, Mary Ann Couch,
Joe Moore, Nancy Gentry, Froney
Elrod, Lucy Elrod, George Cagle,
Mag Cagle, and George Ann Suggs,
did this day disorderly disturb our
services by unbrotberly talk and
false accusations on said Parker’s
part, be ordering the deacons to take
Bro. Bright down from preaching,
and failing in this they all withdrew
to th* grove, and #r* thi* day trv-

Blalock's position almost at every
point, which position, so far as the
disputed questions are concerned,
will be found in our forthcoming
book, which is in preparation for

the important details covering the
whole entire history of the noted
‘•'■Evergreen trouble”, ineipieney to
and including the proceedings of a
a >unoil of Baptist* which is called
to meet with us Friday before the
fourth Sunday in A ago si, next, to
settle the vexed question: Which
is the Evergreen Baptist Church,
the church, or the excluded faction?

Tenth; In eoaelumnn, as to their

fully competent and able to take care
of himself, and we recomend them to

of the case will allow.

Ing to wrongfully set themselves up
a* the Evergreen church, ait of
which is contempt and wrong,
TMItn: By “gosstb" thi* disor¬
derly faction did hold charges again.
«t Bro. Bright falsely accusing, raa
liguing and ausiepreseoUng hits be•
for* the general public, hut they re
fused to formulate and present their
charges before the church. Owing
to these false accusation*, Brr,
Bright did, about the fast of De¬
cember of last y«ar, decline preach¬
ing or acting as moderator any more
unless the church took t ie mat er
to band a ad to <ume way give him
a ehanee before the ehureb to prove
himself Mesar, and so a*- a fall meet¬
ing in January when bis aeeuaors
| were urged to formulate and present
their charges against Bro, Bright
<lw!,,ned ' “* thu * Hr °- Bri ® hl
w$m Vittnullv yindiealedt whereupon
the orderly portion of the chord'
j urged him to resume his plte* and
he did so.
Then at regular meeting in Feb¬
ruary when Bro. Bright called for
the peace and fell' ir*Wb of the
church, lie made two special and ear
nest appeals saying that if any one
had anything against his moral, re
ligious or ministerial character to
then and there name it and he would
vacate the chair and the ehtr h
could appoint a moderator pro tem.
Parker being present, ail kept their
seats, and thus a second time Bright j
was virtually chared of the false ac j
cusations against him.
Fourth; As to Parker’s “motion
to call a council of sister churches,”
it obtained no second at all, but in¬
stead some of his own party objected
as well as Bright. As to Parker’s
proposal to meet Bright in discussion
and the tatters refusal etc., these
statements are not true to fact.
Fifth; As Parker and twenty
others of Bright’s accusers had been
under charges in their church for a
Month previous, of coutse he was
not in order to preach in the house
on our regular meeting day, and for)
this reason also, and not only be¬
cause we had secured Mr. Byron’s
j permission to use the house that
day, did Bright the pastor and the
church refuse to let Parker preach
in the house.
Sixth: Parker himself okokbed
ms deacons th ick to take Bright
I down, but they refused He then
. would preach
j declared that he o«
the floor of th i house at tel. o'clock,
| but on being taiornud that that
would not do, and being defeated in
their undertaking to run rough shod
over the church and pastor, they left
the house and went to the grove.
Seventh; They try, in the arti¬
cle published in above named papers,
to “make believe” that onL eight
persons were left in the house with
Bright and Blalock, but the fact is
that a goodly number of persons,
besides 22 members of the church
19 of whom voted in the exclusion
of the parties named, remained in
the hone*. And in addition to those
present there were several of our
members prevented, by sickness and
otherwise, fr m being present, a
mounting in all that are now, with
Bright, members of our church,
thirty-five,
Eighth; If, as they say, Bright
and the eight others were guilty of
heresy, and if the church already
held charges against them, and if
as they say, Parker and 28 others
who followed him to the grove
constituted what they try to make
the reading public believe was the
“Evergreen church in order”, why
did they »ot stay in the house, try
find guilty and exclude th * guji
ty parties in the house?
They themselves KNEW they were
under charges in their ohutoh, and
that they could not prove themselves
clear, but on the other band, that
the church could and would sustain
the charges, and therefore they re
fused to stay in the bouse and stand
their trial before the church in con¬
ference.
Ninth: As to the “new doc
trine,” which they say are “those of
Dr. Blalock,” and “advocated in
Gospel Trumpet,” will say that the
reason why said doctrine is new to j j
them is because they are not able to,
bring “new things” out of “old sub ;
jt ots,” and for the reason that they
are not “instructed unto the king¬
dom of Reaven,” for Jesui said
