THE MURRAY NEWS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1904
WHAT WE HEAR ABOUT IT.
It is confidently expected that
quite a number of Murray county
aspirants will shy their castors in
the ring and make formal an¬
nouncement in The News of their
candidacy for public office next
week.
While we are not as yet in a
position to speak officially, it is
generally believed that both Col.
C. L. Henry and Capt. 8. (i.
Treadwell will not long delay in
informing the people of their de¬
sire to serve them in the senate
and Messrs. J. L. Robinson, F. M.
Killgore, R. Pryor Campbell, A.
K. Ramsey, O. Parrott and J. 0.
McEntire are all prominently
spoken of as men who would take
great pleasure in aiding in the
enactment of laws in the lower
house of the state legislature,
There has been some talk of
Messrs. W. D. WiRbanks and R.
M. Gudger opposing Judge Ovbey
for the position of Ordinary,
while Messrs. 0. L. Terry, J. M.
Johnson and Sam Higdon will in
all probability contest with Sher
iff W. C. Groves in his efforts for
re-election. There is a current
rumor that Messrs. A. B. Brad¬
ley and C. T. Owens will make
the race for Tax Collector against
the present incumbent, Rev. N.
A. Parsons.
We have also heard mention
of Mr. Hull Kerr as a candidate
for County Treasurer.
As printed above, we have no
authority for these statements,
but merely give them as the re¬
ports reach us. Let us see to it,
though, whosoever may an¬
nounce, that- we elect none but
capable men—men in every way
worthy and well qualified toper
form the duties imposed upon
them in the positions they will be
called upon to fill, and who will
administer the affairs of their of¬
fices justly and impartially.
JUDGE MADDOX’S WITHDRAWAL.
The announcement of Judge
John W. Maddox (given out last
week) not to make the race again
for congress on account of bad
health came in the nature of a
surprise to the majority of the
voters in this district, and is the
occasion of much genuine regret
among the numerous friends of
the Seventh’s able representa¬
tive.
Judge Maddox is considered at
Washington the strongest man in
the Georgia delegation, and his
constituents have recognized his
sigmjl ability by returning him
to tlie House of Representatives
for six consecutive terms—a long¬
er period of time than any one
man has ever served this district
before.
The News hopes for Mr. Mad¬
dox a speedy and complete ret urn
to health, that he may again serve
the people whose interests he has
so capably safeguarded for the
past twelve years.
A pom, of the grand jury (com¬
posed of 23 men) in Catoosa
county last week showed that ev¬
ery member was for Hon. Sam
P. Maddox for solicitor, while
the petit jury voted 10 to 2 in
his favor. This certainly looks
like a “lead-pipe cinch” for the
Colonel in CatooAa. Well, he
certainly deserves it.
The Congressional mileage grab
has been scotched, thanks to the
efforts of Representative Maddox
of Georgia, but it is not yet dead.
The urgent deficiencies appropri¬
ation bill, in which the item for
mileage was incorporated, must
go before the Senate and a num¬
ber of virtuous statesmen are
using what influence they have
to induce the Senate to reinstate
the item. Should the Senate
provide for the appropriation and
“compel the house to accept it,”
there would be rejoicing in the
camps of tlie grafters.
