Politics in this congress¬
ional district bids fair to be
the warmest since the times
when William H. Felton’s
voice was heard in the land.
Why don’t somebody say
something about Jim Smith
or Dick Russell or Dr. Nun
naily or J. H. Estill? If Clark
and Moke don’t mind they
will get an overdose.
The latest report from head¬
quarters is to the effect that
the Southern railroad com¬
pany will complete the D. &
A . With the Dalton & Allen¬
dale company and Divine’s
electric line and the Southern,
it looks very much like Spring
Place will have a road yet.
Dalton should do everything
in her power to get this road
in operation. Something is
going to drop if it is not.
IT is our private opinion,
publicly expressed, that the
long tongued, back
hell raising, world disturbing,
fault finding vipers who go up
and down the world with
nothing in view so great as to
soak in the thought that they
have made enemies of life
long friends, or maybe, ruined
some innocent young girl’s
character with their poisonous
venom, will be sent to the
most bottomless pit in the
firey regions.
GIVE US A REST.
The people, in this age
of enlightenment, like to read
the papers, and hear what is
going on in the world. They
want news and not quite so
much politics.
About all you can see in a
certain one of Georgia’s dai¬
lies is the picture of a great
bi* fat boy, and a little dried
up man, and a very large m
dividual dressed in a railroad
uniform, with a

the scratches on his face, and
one of his hands is in a sung ? .

MADDOX TALKS.
Solicitor General Gives Out Facts in
Gambling Case.
Solicitor General Maddox, be¬
ing approached by a News re
porter to know the facts in rela¬
tion to parties who pleaded guil¬
ty to the offense of gambling
week before last, said he did not
like to talk for publication about
court matters, but in view of the
fact that so much had been said,
lie did not mind giving the facts
as developed by the evidence.
“The parties who entered their
pleas of guilty,” said the solici¬
tor general, “were all who had
participated in the much talked
of Martin game. These gentle¬
men came into open court and
entered their pleas before the
court recessed in the evening.
There was nothing indicating a
“star chamber” proceeding. 1
tried to get Judge Fite to sus¬
pend the case then being argued
in order to receive the pleas of
guilty. Judge Neel was at the
time making an argument, The
court declined this, and said 1
would have to wait until Judge
Neel got through. Being anx¬
ious to get home Friday evening,
I stepped up and spoke to Judge
Neel while he was arguing with a
view of getting him to cut his
argument short. He stated to
me that he would not take a
great while longer. 1 waited,
and before court recessed 1 called
Judge Fite’s attention to
cases. Pleas were entered and
sentences were pronounced in
open court. The gentlemen
pleading guilty had been waiting
anywhere from 80 to 45 minutes
before the court recessed.
“There was no effort, what
ever, to prevent any names going
before the grand jury, or
being preferred. In every com¬
munication I had with Judge
Fite lie said' to me that' the
whole truth about the matter
ought to be found out, and it
made no difference if Ins boy
was in it, he wanted the truth,
and nobody shielded. After the
return of the true bill in the
Martin case, the grand jury
thought, as I thought, that the
truth in relation to the matter
had been developed. There were
one or two very important mat¬
ters demanding the attention of
the grand jury, and the body
decided to make no further
investigation in regard to ganri,
«,tod mtil Friday""
“i n the meantime, a good deal
was being said with reference to
eert,in parties who had not been
i-nlicted, and on the eve of
adjournment, «ult r consultation
with Judge Fite, I went before
tllc granJ iorJ , 8ay)llg to them
^iiat it had reached my ears that
the . , whole , . truth . sil had l not A 1 been
developed in relation to
playing, and that they should
endeavor to find out the whole
truth. 1 he body . then « agreed j

would be issued, and that, the

Judge Fite was asked if he had
THE MHERAT NEWS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1800
anything to Hay for publication.
He said :
“1 care but little about fcho
bitter personal attacks which
have been and are made on me
for polil ical purposes, for 1 can
and will take care of myself.
But when attacks are made on
my judicial integrity then for¬
bearance ceases to be a virtue
and a halt should be called. For
,rhe protection of judiciary I am
glad the grand jury has taken
the matter in hand.
“This recent attack on me j s
in line with similar charges and
insinuations made by Gordon
Lee in his communication from
Washington and published in
nearly ail the papers of the
seventh district, and was proba
abiy inspired by him; but 1 will
lat what Lee has said rest until
we meet face to face before the
people.
As to the charges made against
me in the Dalton Argus, that 1
interfered with the work of the
grand jury and that f held a
secret, or star chamber session of
the court to sentence the parties
who plead guilty to gambling,
there is not one word of truth in
the charges, as can and will be
established by a score of compe¬
tent and disinterested vv it nesses.
There was no excuse for such a
publication.’’—The CartersVille

Now Thought.
Is the 1). & A R. R to be
built? Will the Southern Rail
way build it?
These are the questions
that are now being asked. A

Quasi dffieial information
has it that the Southern

the 1). & A. R, R. grade, and
complete that line to the

Another view is taken, viz.,
that the Southern will double
