This is the home city of each
of the candidates and the de¬
bate bids to be a warm one.
The death of Senator Ar¬
thur Pue Gorman, of Mary¬
land, comes as a great shock
to the entire country. While
he has always been a demo¬
crat, and an aggressive one at
that, he demanded the respect
of all political 1 parties.

The club women and work
ing girls have been having a
“hot time” at the Federation
of Women’s Clubs in St. Paul,
Minn. A tongue-slashing bout
took place between two of the
principal speakers, and but
for the intervention of friends
on each side a few brooms
might have been brought into
play.
THAT WOULD-BE LYNCHING.
Of all the tom-foolery that
was ever heard of in all the
tom-foolishness in this oftimes
foolish world of ours the big¬
gest piece of tom-foolishness
in the entire outfit took place
when Franklin and Swanger
were removed from our jail,
on the day they were sen¬
tenced, and placed in Whit
held county’s jail, and not
content with the removal of
the prisoners to that place of
detention the court was asked
to and did sign an order to
have them removed from that
place to Atlanta.
Sheriff Groves was notified
Friday that they were to be
carried to Atlanta, and he im
medietely went to Dalton and,
taking his prisoners from that
jail hurried them to Atlanta’s
bastile.
It is not learned yet where
they will be taken from there
but it is supposed that, it the
authorities in charge of the
case can make a deal with the
United States government
whereby they can secure the
services of a regiment of sol
diers from Ft. McPherson as
a body guard to the two men,
they will be kept in Atlanta
until they can be assigned
places in the penitentialy.
Capt. Ramsey had as many
friends as any man in Murray
county, and while his people
and friends felt very hard, of
course, to the men who mur¬
dered him, they were content
to abide by the law. They
said from the start that they
were willing to allow the law
to take its course.
Who whispered into the
ears of the defendants’ law¬
yers that a mob was being
formed to lynch these men
no one will, perhaps, ever
know as the lawyers them¬
selves did not know the men
and, whoever they were, did
not know what they were
talking about.
Murray’s dark and bloody
days have past and gone: her
people are law-abiding people.
They are content to let the
law decide things now, and
for such an excitement to get
among two or three men alone
is out of the question entirely.
Had Capt. Rrmsey’s friends
contemplated lynching these
they would never have been
content to wait till court,
which shows that they were
content to let twelve men de¬
cide as to what sentence
should be put on them. The
days of lynching are gone in
our county and don’t place
things on us that we are not
guilty of. Let us rest in peace.

THE MURRAY NEWS, FRIDAY, JUNES, 191*6
TO THE VOTERS OF MURRAY.
The time being so short
between now and the date
set for the coming election,
which is on the 15th of this
month, it will be impossible
for me to canvass the county
and see each one of you sep
erately.
Someone might say that
there is no use canvassing tire
county anyway, as I have no
opposition—that it would be
time wasted. I do not look
at the matter in this light and
were it in my power I would
see every man in the county
between now and the 15th.
As it is 1 do not feel that 1
would be doing myself or the
county right by canvassing a
part and leaving the other out,
so 1 have decided not to un¬
derbade it at all.
The good people of the
county have said by their ac¬
tions in the matter that I will
have no opposition in my race
for representative to fill the
unexpired term of my father,
and that I am, under live pre¬
vailing rule of the county, the
proper one to represent you
this year, and I thank every
one of them.
When elected I will try my
very best to till the otliee as
creditably as my father did,
and at all times have the best
interests of our count} in
view. 1 appreciate the honor
you will have bestowed on me
by electing me your repre¬
sentative. My mother and
the minor heirs of the family
will share the proceeds with
me after my expenses are
paid.
Again thanking the good
people of the county in ad¬
vance for their support in the
coming election, I am
