The indications are that the
Macon centennial fair will show
the greatest exhibit of machinery
ever seen in Jim south.
Saloons will probably go out of
existence in Colbert county next
July, when the dispensary sys¬
tem will be substituted.
Harry Edmundson, a negro, is
at the Macon city hospital suffer¬
ing from a fractured skull as a
result of a fight at Pete Worthy’s
saloon.

Wheeler, at Crumps Park, Ma¬
con, was run down by a car on
the Vineville line in the park
grounds and instantly killed.
Sam Carr a colored engineer in
the Central Ice factory at Macon,
met with an accident in the mills
which made it necessary to am¬
putate his right hand.
The work of paving the various
streets and avenues of Columbus
is being pushed very rapidly,
and ere long there will be many
blocks of paved streets in the
city.
At, Hazlehurst the residence of
Mr. Morgan, town marshal, w-as
destroyed by fire. Very little
was saved. There was small
insurance. The origin of the fire
is unknown.
Rural carriers appointed: Cor
dele route, 3, John S. Smith,
carriers, William M. Kennedy,
substitute; Fort Valley route 5,
Fred G. Smith, carrier, Miles C.
Green, substitute.
Mrs. Sallie Thomas, of Tucker,
was found dead in her bed. She
was about, 90 years of age and her
death is supposed to have been
caused by heart failure, as she
retired in her usual good health.
Columbus manufacturers are
co-operating with the board, of
trustees of the Columbus public
schools in securing the equipment
for the new secondary industrial
school, which will be opened Oc¬
tober 1 .
After a hot discussion by the
city council an ordinance was
adopted accepting a donation of
$80,000 from Andrew Carnegie to
erect a library in Columbus and
appropriating $ 8,000 annually to
maintain it.
The Valdosta Baseball club of
the Georgia State league has
disbanded and the players will
leave for other parts. The team
was never a Valdosta enterprise,
being organized by Mr. A. L.
Starr of Savannah.
Prof. R. W. Edenfield has ac¬
cepted his former place as head
of Hearn’s academy at Cave
Springs. After resigning he was
prevailed upon by the trustees
to reconsider, which he did, to
the satisfaction of the friends of
the school.
There is a united effort under
way at Abbeville to obtain a new
depot for the Seaboard Air Line
railroad at that place. Many of
the citizens claim the old depot
is a disgrace, the only one that
Abbeville has ever had, having
been there about twenty years.
During a severe thunder storm
the three little girls of H. P.
Humphrey of Mayfield were in
the yard under a tree. Light
ning struck the tree, killing two
of the childien instantly and the
other is so seriously injured that
there is little hope for her recov¬
ery.
